His brother, Christian, joined him a decade later. By 1875 their firm, renamed Herter Brothers, was supplying the White House with furnishings, as it had been doing for some of America's wealthiest families since 1858. During this opulent period, Herter Brothers could claim to be the leading cabinetmaking and decorating firm in the country. The best of the Herter Brothers' furniture and interiors are displayed in 133 color and 167 black-and-white illustrations, including many close-up details as well as comparative work by rival fine cabinetmakers of the time in New York and Europe. Herter Brothers tells the story of the company from its earliest manifestations, when Gustave worked with other partners and alone, through his partnership with his brother, to Christian's years as head of the firm and the end of his tenure ; Katherine S. Howe is the director of the Rienzi house museum for European decorative arts in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.; Peter C. Marzio. Peter was the director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, a post he held for almost three decades; born into a working-class immigrant family, becoming the first in his family to graduate from High School. At Juniata College he became inspired by the art and museum world, deciding to make this his career. He went on to earn a doctorate in art and American history from the University of Chicago. He served as curator of prints and drawings at the Smithsonian and then as director and chief executive officer of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, before becoming the director in Houston. ; Philippe de Montebello is a French and American museum director. He served from 1977 to 2008 as the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. On his retirement, he was both the longest-serving director in the institution's history and the third longest-serving director of any major art museum in the world; He immigrated to the United States of America in the 1950s, and became a naturalized citizen of the US in 1955. He was educated in New York City at the Lycée Français de New York, graduated from Harvard University with a degree in art history, and earned an MA from New York University, after which he embarked on a career in Fine Arts. He became the Director of the Metropolitan Museum in 1977 and has become widely known as the public face of the museum.; Ned Rifkin joined the staff of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in December 1986 as the first chief curator for exhibitions. ; Contents: A European context, 1840-80 : England / Simon Jervis. Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Emil J. Gumbel (1891-1966) began his career simply as a professor of mathematical statistics in Heidelberg, but he is most remembered as a political activist militantly advocating for pacifism during the complicated and volatile times of the Weimar Republic in Germany. As a Jew with left-wing socialist and democratic sensibilities, he was exiled to France and later America. Ironically, the same writings on political terror and politicized justice in Nazi Germany that caused his ostracization saved his life. A courageous man, Gumbel spoke out passionately against the Nazis and came to symbolize a 'one-man party' at the center of controversy in German academia. His intellectual and moral vigor never waned, and despite his significant scientific contributions, it is his legacy of political ideology that endures for later generations to learn from. This biography chronicles the public life of a man not entirely part of the political or the academic world, but who has earned his place in history nonetheless.…

Draft script for the 1973 West German film. Text in German. Based on Arthur Schnitzler's controversial 1897 play "Reigen." A satire of the sexual and class mores of the late 1800s, not produced on stage until 1920, although published versions in various languages were available as early as 1900. With its frank sexual content and depictions of relationships across class and cultural lines, the play was immediately condemned as pornography and withdrawn from the German stage, although it remained unsurprisingly popular. Schnitzler's play was adapted for film several times previously, most notably by Max Ophuls in 1950 and Roger Vadim in 1964, both using the French title "La Ronde." Set in Vienna. Green untitled wrappers. Title page present, with credits for playwright Arthur Schnitzler and director Otto Schenk. 142 leaves, with last page of text numbered 138. Mechanical duplication. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good, with a gold prong binding. …

Collection of 12 vintage oversize double weight reference photographs for the 1973 German film, based on the controversial 1897 play "Reigen" ("La Ronde") by Arthur Schnitzler, Adapted three time previously; by Max Ophuls in 1950 and Roger Vadim in 1964, both as "La Ronde," and by Richard Lerner and Paul Glickler in 1971 as "Hot Circuit," as well as several time subsequently. Schnitzler's play, which satirizes the sexual and class morals of its era was not produced on stage until 1920, although published versions in various languages were available as early as 1900. With its frank sexual nature and depictions of relationships that crossed class and cultural lines, the play was immediately condemned as pornography and withdrawn from the German stage, although it remained popular elsewhere. The play consists of a series of vignettes, each featuring a pair of lovers, with each character appearing in two consecutive scenes, with one character in the first scene appearing in the last. The photographs in this collection are from four scenes, each featuring either Sydne Rome or Maria Schneider, as follows: One photograph of Hans Bremmer and Rome as "The Soldier and the Parlor Maid." Four photographs of Rome and Helmut Berger as "The Parlor Maid and the Young Gentleman." Five photographs of Peter Weck and Schneider as "The Husband and the Little Miss." Two photographs of Schneider and Michael Heltau as "The Little Miss and the Poet." 9.5 x 12.25 inches. Near Fine.…
