Fine cameo portrait of the Chief Magistrate Napha, Lew Chew, (Ryukyu) Japan, prepared for the official account "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879.

A fine cameo portrait of a Japanese woman in costume from Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
