The Old Art of Clarino Playing on Trumpets is a foundational 1894 musicological book written by German musicologist and composer Hermann Ludwig Eichborn. It was famously translated into English with an introduction and commentary by American music theorist Bryan R. Simms, published by The…Brass Press in 1976.The text serves as a historical examination of the virtuoso, high-register "clarino" style that dominated natural (valveless) trumpet playing during the Baroque era. It is one of the earliest modern academic attempts to reconstruct how 17th and 18th-century trumpet players reached the extreme upper partials of the natural instrument. The Clarino Register: Eichborn explores how musicians played stepwise, melodic music between the 8th and 20th overtones. This was a feat required by composers like J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel but mostly lost after valves were introduced.Pedagogical Shift: The work tracks the transition from oral guild traditions to early written methods, shedding light on the closely guarded lips-and-embouchure techniques of historical court trumpeters.
