A highly unusual, illustrated manual for European entrepreneurs to navigate the Asian silk road. This scarce manual serves as an unconventional resource for European entrepreneurs intending to engage in trade along the Asian silk road. It provides a detailed account of the organization and management of typical overland merchant caravans in Asia, accompanied by three full-page engravings illustrating caravan and camp setups. Written by Didier Bugnon (1676-1736), a renowned French geographer and engineer holding the title of "Geographe ordinaire de S.A. Royale de Lorraine," the book offers extensive insights into caravan logistics. Bugnon covers topics such as animal procurement, including camels and elephants, precise strategies for establishing defensive encampments during the journey, and descriptions of the cities, principalities, and terrain encountered along the route. Of particular interest is Bugnon's discussion on the use of asbestos (pp. 37-39), citing its presence in Cyprus and bordering regions with Arabia. He notes its utilization in crafting protective stockings and undergarments to shield against the intense heat experienced during caravan travels through Asia. (Landenius Enegren 2021) Additionally, the manual features a noteworthy section on the employment of pigeons as messengers between caravans and the emirs of Arabia, showcasing innovative communication methods utilized in cross-continental trade expeditions. (Ragheb 2002) RBH records indicate the sale of only one copy within the past eighty years (Christie's, 2007).
