Josephine Marsalis Clardy was born in 1881 in Missouri, and moved to the small frontier town of El Paso at the age of one year. She spent the remainder of her life there, married a railroad executive and was widowed about eighteen year…s later. From her home on Montana Street, the widow Josephine Clardy Fox became a legend until her death in 1970. Throughout these years, she remained a distinctly private person, one whose wealth increased as El Paso grew, one who bequeathed the University of Texas as El Paso over three million dollars. The real story behind her legendary life and bygone days in El Paso have been carefully researched and interestingly narrated by Ruby Burns. The book is designed by Carl Hertzog. BINDING/CONDITION: two color cloth: turquoise with mauve at the spine; a Near Fine book, with a Very Good dust jacket; the dust jacket is not price clipped. index. She was born in 1881 in Missouri, and moved to the small frontier town of El Paso with her parents at the age of one year, and other than her music studies at Berkeley and touring as a singer,…she spent the rest of her life there. She married a railroad executive, whom she had first met when touring and was widowed eighteen years later. There were some difficult years, but as El Paso grew, her wealth from real estate ventures also increased. Thoughout her life she was generous in donating to the city and at her death she bequeathed the University of Texas as El Paso over three million dollars. Color frontispiece, photographs, including some in color. An attractive volume, a small quarto,designed by Carl Hertzog and bound in turquoise cloth boards, with a gilt fan on the front cover, over a lavender cloth spine. Index. xvi, 143 pp. Fine in near fine dust jacket (price-clipped).
