Alphonso Smith, an esteemed University of Virginia English professor and founder of the Virginia Folklore Society. Alphonso Smith's efforts to collected and preserve Virginia folk ballads formed the basis of the project and editor Davis dedicated the book to his memory. Red cloth, 634 pages, fold-out map at back. Has a bit of rubbing and fading of the dye on the spine.

Usual toning and light foxing to text block edges.… Some foxing and soiling to endpapers; rear free endpaper has small chip at lower fore-edge margin. Some light foxing and scattered minor soiling to interior text leaves which overall remain clean. Binding is firm. This is the scarce leadoff volume of the Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society which reached a total of fourteen volumes published inclusive to 1914 plus a five volume Centenary Series published between 1916 and 1925.
