Christophe Plantin (c. 1520 1589) of Touraine was trained as a bookbinder. He fled from Paris where at least one printer had recently been burned at the stake for heresy, and went to Antwerp. There he bound books, became a citizen, and by 1555 began to print books, at first for distribution by other publishers. The city was already an established center of printing woodcuts, engravings and books. Plantin took on an assistant, Jan Moretus (Moerentorf) (1543-1610), who read Latin and Greek and could write correspondence in several modern languages. He became Plantin's business manager, son-in-law and eventually his successor in the Plantin printing press. For over two hundred years the Plantin press had a monopoly, granted by the papacy, for the printing of liturgical formularies, including in Spain. In 1562, suspected of heresy, Plantin fled to France for two years. At an auction of his press, friends bought up his equipment on his behalf. Cesare Baronio, C.O. (also known as Caesar Baronius; 1538 1607) was an Italian Oratorian, cardinal and historian of the Catholic Church. His best-known works are his Annales Ecclesiastici ("Ecclesiastical Annals"), which appeared in 12 folio volumes (1588 1607). He is under consideration for sainthood and, in 1745, Pope Benedict XIV declared him "Venerable." VOLUME TWELVE ONLY! PLANTIN! RAREE1609DORP - 12/25 - HK3015.

Corners slightly bumped; strain on bottom hinge of spine; slight wear and staining on boards. Overall, a very good and rare copy. Bibliography: Olschki, Theologia, 999 This book contains the Annales Ecclesiastici (full title Annales ecclesiastici a Christo nato ad annum 1198) which was first published between 1588 and 1607 and consisting of twelve folio volumes. It is a history of the first 12 centuries of the Christian Church and it was written by the Italian cardinal Caesar Baronius (1538 1607). Baronius is best known for this work, which was undertaken at the request of Philip Neri as an answer to the anti-Catholic history, the Magdeburg Centuries. In the engraved title page are depicted, against a classical architectural background, St Peter and St Paul (characterised by their typical attributes: the keys and the book and the sword) standing on two columns decorated by cornucopias and small putti. The Virgin and Child are depicted above the Saints inside a stemma held by two winged angels. At the feet of the Saints is represented a personification of the Church, holding a cross and papal regalia, with the chained personifications of Heresy (on the left) as an old woman with sagging breasts holding two snakes, and Paganism (on the right), in the guise a man in roman military costume. The author is depicted, in a separate full-page engraving, while at work in in his study, surrounded by books and with a window open on the Italian countryside and a church, possibly Santa Maria in Vallicella where Baronius lectured for three decades and where he died and where he is now buried.

Ajouter au panierLeather. Etat : Good. None (illustrateur). A scarce second edition of this history of the first twelve centuries of the Christian Church, in the original Latin. The second edition of this work.In the original Latin.Illustrated with a frontispiece and an engraved title page. It was first published between 1588 and 1607 as a response to the Lutheran Historia Ecclesiae Christi (History of the Church of Christ) in which the Magdeburg theologians surveyed the history of the church in order to demonstrate how the Catholic Church represented the Antichrist and had deviated from the beliefs and practices of the early church.Long before Baronius was appointed Librarian of the Vatican in 1597, he had access to material and sources in its archives that were previously unpublished or unused. He used these in the development of his work. Accordingly, Annales Ecclesiastici is considered by most as extremely useful and complete. The eminent historian Lord Acton called it "the greatest history of the Church ever written."He began writing this account of the Church after nearly thirty years of lecturing at Santa Maria in Vallicella. In the Annales he treats history in strict chronological order and keeps theology in the background.Originally published in twelve folio volumes. Rebound in a half-morocco binding. Externally sound, though with wear to the extremities and some marks to the boards. Slight loss to the rear board, and closed tear to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Front hinge is strained, with cords visible. Institutional ink stamp to title page, and to endpapers. Pages are spotted throughout, with some heavier foxing in places. Good. book.
