Original sturdy textured brown cloth with gilt lettering spine, debossed decoration lower spine, debossed borders front and rear covers. The original spine has been relaid over new spine, original EPs preserved but japanese tissue at front inside hinge, spi…ne gilt faded to brown, several light spots to front cover, solid binding, old owner name signed to front pastedown and different old owner name signed to original FFEP (and same name signed to title page) with matching old name label affixed to corner of front pastedown otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, some browning to pages opposite illustration plates, illustration plates bright and clean, some light browning on some pages due to oxidation from text ink (not bad), folding maps have small tears at stubs otherwise are in good condition, complete with all pages, plates and maps. The book measures 231mm tall x 158mm and has 363 pages + errata page, 10 illustration plates (9 in color, 1 tinted in dark gray), many tables, 4 folding maps. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.

Mullan (1830-1909) later used the knowledge he acquired making this survey to produce a guide to the gold fields of the Northwest. In a period three-quarter black morocco over marbled paper binding, with gilt-stamped titles and decorations, four raised bands, and peach endpapers. Some general shelfwear; otherwise very good. Ex-Northern Pacific Railway Co. with 2 small rubberstamps on the flyleaf and a small accession label at the low…er corner of the upper cover, but no other markings. Laid in is an 1880 G.P.O.-published bifolium headed "Northern Pacific Railroad" being the printed text of a letter from Mullan to Senator L. F. Grover, "relative to shipment of cattle from Oregon or Washington Territory." See Howes M-884 showing this to be another issue of the Senate Exec. Doc. 43. Wagner-Camp 393.
