Distinguished by hand-colored aquatint plates of drawings by Samuel Howitt. In this copy, the 39 plates present are generally in very Good condition and the original tissue guards remain intact with most. However, this copy lacks Plate No. 40 and the several following pages of descriptive tex thatt had originally accompanied that plate are not present. Both the front and back covers are missing from this volume. Pages are detached or very loose between the front endpaper and the first page of narrative about Plate No. 1. Between that page and page 446 the binding is intact and an original leather backstrip is in place. Page 447/448 is detached. This copy is in a 9-1/2" by 12-3/4" format with "W. Lewis, printer" stated on the verso of the title page. So, again, Plates 1-39 are present, with Plate 40 is absent. (their ink-stamp to the verso of the front free end-paper). In the corners, a stag, a fox, a lion and an elephant all gilt. On the spine, five raised bands. Tears to the edges of the leaves and plates, some repaired, seldom if ever affecting text or image. Lower fore-corner of leaf 12 restored (not affecting the text). Thomas George Williamson (ca. 1759-1817) served as an officer in the Bengal army of the British East India Company whose career was cut short for publishing in a newspaper his view of military policy. As such, he occupied a liminal position in British India, which allowed him to make rather more interesting observations than many of his co-evals (e.g., Cornwallis). Oriental field sports, first published in 20 parts in 1807 (reissued in 1808, and, per Tooley, "greatly inferior), is, as the long title suggests, an ambitious work that hazards far-reaching observations about Indian natural history, landscape and culture. Samuel Howitt (1756/7-1822) specialized in the illustration of animals; the pochoir (i.e., stencil-painted) title of a recumbent tiger is an emblem of British books on India. Bibliographers do not generally (Abbey notes the Young imprint) record the present edition, which has come to market with imprints of Orme, Young and McLean as here. The watermarks (seemingly to the text only) date to 1817 and 1818. Frank J. Pfister (ca. 1853-1935) established a book-binding firm in New York in the late XIXc, at times working with Alfred William Launder, the Metropolitan Museum's first bookbinder. Cf. Contemporary dark green straight-grained full morocco binding, with ornate gilt border decoration -- a repeat of vines and leaves, contained within ruled lines, and also a blindstamped band within this one. Five raised bands of spine with ruled lines denoting the raised areas and four gilt impressed vignettes of deer. Professionally rebacked, both volumes, with original spines retained and attached in a manner that the work is as inconspicuous as possible. The gilt decoration -- floral borders, ruled edges, turn-ins, spine illustrations, lettering, has spots that are dulled, but generally the gold remains bright. The current work stems out of his compilation of different scenes of British life in India, in particular, that of wealthy Europeans among native servants and entertainers, providing "an important window into Anglo-Indian social relations of the time" (UC Santa Barbara Library, online). Binding is very poor - the boards are knocked at the corners and in two pieces and have come away from the papers completely (it has been repaired with paper in the past), the stitching to the papers is coming undone. Plate 1 water damaged, plate 8 water stain to edges, plate 18 slight water staining, There is scattered foxing and staining and page edges are darkened but the pages are good considering the books age. This book would need to be rebound but would be a fine copy when done so as all the pages and plates are intact with none missing .
