Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : Fair. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Quarto. xvii, [1], 531,[1] pages. In Memoriam. Lineage of the Washington Artillery. Illustrations (photographs, drawings). Maps. Unit Rosters. Louisiana World War II Casualty Lists. Service record format inside covers (not filled in)…. Inscribed by the author on the fep. Inscription reads For Herbert W. Rutledge, My fellow Washington Artilleryman in the 935th F. A. Bn. who was at all the places that unit went in WWII, hoping that he will find here something of interest. With regards Powell A. "Pat" Casey. The author joined the Washington Artillery at the age of eighteen. He served in the unit for four years as an enlisted man and for sixteen years as an officer. After the war he earned an AB from Spring Hill College and a JD from Loyola University. He worked in the legal department of a major oil company for thirty-four years. He became a noted local historian, authoring Louisiana in the War of 1812 and published numerous articles in professional journals. This is a narrative account of the World War II services of the 141st. Field Artillery of New Orleans, one of the country's oldest and most famous artillery units. Called into active federal service in January 1941 it was eventually separated into the Hq. and Hq. Battery XIX Corps Artillery, the 141st F.A. Battalion and the 935th F. A. Battalion. The two battalions, as Corps artillery, saw extensive service in Italy with the Fifth Army and in France and Germany with the Seventh Army and the First French Army. The route wound through Oran, Bizerte, Cassino, Anzio, Rome, Florence, Southern France, Montelimar, the Vosges Mountains, Colmar, the Saar and Bavaria. Battery commander Captain Ducote's diary with sketches kept at Anzio is most interesting. Included in the book is an outline of the activities of XIX Corps Artillery Headquarters and of the 773d. Tank Destroyer Battalion from the landing beaches in Normandy to Czechoslovakia. The last named unit was formed from the Anti-tank Batteries of the 141st and 166th F.A. Regiments. Also included is an outline of the services of the 105th. A.A> (AW) Battalion in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, the New Orleans units which were merged into the 141st. artillery. The names of over 3500 men from many states who served in the Washington Artillery in WW II are listed as well as the names of over 5000 servicemen with Louisiana addresses who died or were killed in action in that war. The names of 1435 members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard who were wounded are also given. Sixty full page maps of combat areas in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany are included. Aside from many unit pictures there are over 60 U.S. Army photos of places and of guns, tanks, equipment and motor vehicles. A World War II artilleryman and particularly one who served with the Fifth or Seventh Armies will find much here to awaken memories. Participants as well as scholars could trace the route of many units through the combat areas. Professional soldiers should find many comments and data of benefit.
