Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. CAVELL, Edith. - [Memorial napkin: Nurse Edith Cavell, "The Florence Nightingale of Brussels"] . Wigan: Palatine Press, [1915]. Square crepe paper napkin, 375 × 375 mm, printed on one side in red, blue, gold, and black, incorporating a half-tone reproduction of the familiar Daily Mirror… portrait of Cavell with her dogs, framed by Union flags and memorial text. Old folds and light foxing to edges but well preserved for such a fragile production. A very good example. Issued within weeks of Edith Cavell's execution by firing squad on 12 October 1915, this ephemeral napkin was part of the rapid memorialisation of Cavell as a patriotic martyr. A nurse and Red Cross VAD based in Brussels, Cavell was arrested for aiding Allied soldiers to escape occupied Belgium and was prosecuted by a German military court. Her death provoked international outrage and gave rise to a wide range of memorial souvenirs, sermons, and broadsides. The text printed here is an example of the rhetoric that transformed Cavell into a symbol of national sacrifice, employing religious and sentimental imagery: "Our English Edith was made of steel and lilies … 'I am happy to die for my country'. Those words will be inscribed in stars across eternal skies so long as English womanhood is a living thing." A scarce survival: ephemeral by nature, these napkins were rarely preserved. Only one other noted in commerce, and none currently traced in institutional holdings.

Ajouter au panier11 real photo postcards all tipped into a fanfare binding with one card loose. Original printed wrapper with fold over flap. Cards are in fine unfaded condition with no faults. Each card is captioned in French and English on the rear and marked with the photographers name. Very nice condition. The is a commemorative souvenir pro…duced just after the first world war to show images related to Miss Edith Cavell and Gabrielle Petit, both of whom where executed by the Germans during their occupation of Belgium during the First World War. Edith Cavell was a British nurse that saved many lives on both sides and helped many allied soldiers escape occupied Belgium. She was caught and sentenced to death by firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage. Gabrielle Petit was a Belgian women that spied for the British and was caught and sentenced to death by firing squad as well. Both women were revered after the war and this folder and images document a lot of what happened after the war. The images show classic portraits of both women, monuments to them. and a number of grizzly images of exhumed bodies including one German soldier that refused to shoot during the execution. We can find very little about the photographer and who produced the folder. Seems very scarce.

Ajouter au panierRare surviving copy of this fragile memorial napkin commemorating the life of Edith Cavell (1865-1915). Using evocative language, the napkin tells the story of Cavell, her role in the war, and her death at the hands of a German firing squad on 12 October 1915. Cavell was a British nurse working in German-occupied Belgium at a Re…d Cross hospital which treated casualties from both sides, as well as civilians. From September 1914, she became part of a network that sheltered Allied soldiers and Belgians eligible for military service, arranging their escape. Over the next 11 months she helped around 200 British, French, and Belgian soldiers to leave the country. Initial shock at Cavell's death was quickly succeeded by international protest, and she became, almost overnight, a heroine and martyr. She was used as a symbol of the Allied cause and her memory was invoked in recruitment posters and propaganda such as this napkin. Cavell's memory was also immortalized in statues. The most famous, by Sir George Frampton, was commissioned in 1915 and erected in the early 1920. Situated in London in St Martin's Place, it is inscribed with the words "Patriotism is not enough, I must have no hatred or bitterness for anyone", part of her final message from prison. We have traced no copies of this napkin listed on WorldCat. Square crepe paper napkin (355 x 355 mm). Frame-mounted in archival board (477 x 480 mm.) Printed on one side in black, red, blue, and gold, large central photograph. Old folding creases, a few small edge chips, paper flaw to left-hand side, overall well preserved.
