Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. Delving into the annals of Anglo-Jewish history, this book sheds light on two largely forgotten 18th-century incidents and the fascinating individuals involved in them. Jacob Kimchi, a descendant of the renowned Kimchi family of scholars, and Shalom Buzaglo, a renowned Cabbalist and Dayan, take center stage as they engage in heated disputes with the prominent Rabbi Israel Meshullam Zalman Emden. The first dispute revolves around a shechita (ritual slaughter) controversy, where Kimchi accuses the Sephardic Shochetim (ritual slaughterers) of declaring unfit animals as kosher. Emdens opinion as head of the Beth Din (rabbinical court) plays a decisive role in the debate, reflecting the complexities of communal leadership and religious observance during this era. The second incident centers on the validity of a Get (Jewish divorce document). Buzaglo's challenge to Emdens ruling on the matter exposes tensions within the Ashkenazi community and raises questions about rabbinical authority and the rights of individuals. Through these disputes, the book offers a glimpse into the vibrant intellectual and religious landscape of Anglo-Jewry in the 18th century. It underscores the diverse perspectives and personalities that shaped Jewish life during a period of transformation and growth. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book unearths the history of the Ashkenazi Jewish community in early London, using previously unseen material in Hebrew manuscripts. The author focuses on the London Rabbis who shaped the community between 1756 and 1792, a period when the cityâs Jewish population was small but growing against a backdrop of political turmoil and social change. At the heart of the book is an examination of their sermons, giving a fascinating glimpse of the everyday lives of these early Jewish settlers. We learn of their struggles to balance their faith with the increasingly secular English society around them, their clashes with the established Sephardi community, and the internal tensions within their own community as they negotiated modernity. The author skillfully explores the wider historical and religious context of the time, demonstrating how these early rabbis played a central role in shaping Jewish identity in Britain. In doing so, this book not only illuminates a forgotten chapter in Anglo-Jewish history but offers fresh insights into questions of assimilation, religious observance, and the nature of community in a transformative period.
