This offering is a vintage copy of The Rhine, Italy - Greece in a Series of Drawings from Nature by Colonel Cockburn; Major Irton; Messrs. Bartlett, Leitch, and Wolfensberger with Historical and Legendary Descriptions by the Rev. G. N. Wright . The book was published by Fisher, Son & Co. in 1841 and appears to be a First Edition . . . I'm not even sure whether things like that mattered back then. The book is in very good + condition (Particularly for having been published nearly 200 years ago and has no dust jacket. The book is 8 7/8" by 11" and has 80-some pages with NONE of the dozens of beautifully done black-and-white illustrations (each protected by a page of "onion-skin" paper) counted in that page count. I'd say that it might have 150 pages total. It has leather boards with gilded decorations for a binding. What a great book for the Rhine historian . . . or any artist who appreciates beautifully done black-and-white illustrations of 200 years ago. Thank you!

Full contemporary leather morocco with heavily decorated gilding on spine. Fine interior, extremely clean, with usual offsetting of plates. Binding is VG - , with some shelfwear, rubbing along spine edges, with greater wear in upper 1/4 to 1/2 inch, corners of boards, and light soilage to boards. Very tight binding, and decorative gilding on spine, which is quite ornate, is bright. Attractive plates of Geneva, Mont Blanc, castles glacier, Vevay, Lausanne, Fribourg, Bern, Thun, chateaux, villages, Lautebrunen, Interlochen, lakes, Sarnen, Lucerne, the Rhine, Lugano, with many views of the mountains. Perret 1042: 'Rare et très recherché'. Cockburn is believed to have been the first to use a camera lucida in making his drawings of the Alps.

First edition. 4to., recently rebound with a dark brown calf spine, marble boards, raised bands, gilt decoration in the compartments, leather spine label, vii, 200pp. With 60 engraved plates and an engraved titlepage. Titlepage a bit ragged around edges, some repairs to the last leaf (no loss to text, repairs are in the margins only), occasional foxing but still a near fine copy. James Pattison Cockburn [1779-1847] army officer and water-colourist. According to German composer Louis Spohr, to whom he showed more than 200 landscapes of Naples and its surroundings, Cockburn had ôextraordinary skill in catching charming views in a matter of minutes.ö He was becoming an indefatigable sketcher.In the period 1816û22 he produced drawings in sepia as he moved from place to place in the Alps and elsewhere in Italy and Switzerland: vast panoramas and mountain passes figured alongside scenes of streets and market places. The wealth of pictures is explained not only by CockburnÆs mastery of technical means but also, according to Spohr, by his use of ôa machine that projected the landscape, in reduced scale, on paper.ö Although it is not certain that Spohr was referring to a camera lucida, the sharpness of the images in several sketches done at the time he made his remark in some measure substantiates this hypothesis." In the 1820's Cockburn was posted to Upper and Lower Canada and "during these years of peace Cockburn had ample leisure to sketch Quebec and its environs as well as scenes in Upper and Lower Canada where his tours of inspection took him."
