Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the rightful ownership of the remains of Saint Augustine and Saint Severinus, both stored in the ancient basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, Italy. The author explores whether the basilica's Augustinian monks are the sole owners or if the people of Pavia have joint ownership due to their historical patronage of the church. The book traces ownership of the saints' remains since their enshrinement in 725, and places this particular case within the broader framework of medieval and early modern debates about religious relics. The author argues that the citizens of Pavia have a strong historical claim of ownership, which demonstrates the complex and evolving nature of religious authority and community identity in the Middle Ages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical and legal tenets surrounding the possession of religious relics. The author traces the evolution of canonical laws governing the ownership and custodianship of sacred remains, arguing that despite their classification as outside the realm of property, relics have often been subject to claims of ownership and patronage. The author challenges the conventional wisdom that relics are inherently excluded from commercial trade, dominion, and possession by examining historical examples of both authorized and illicit transfers of relics between individuals, families, and religious institutions. Through meticulous research and analysis of historical documents, the author sheds light on the complex interplay of religious, legal, and social factors that have shaped the treatment of sacred relics throughout history. This book will be of great interest to scholars of religious studies, legal history, and anyone interested in the fascinating world of relics and their significance in human society.
