Without front and rear blank. PROVENANCE David Enderton Johnson was a biblical scholar, author, and an exceptionally prolific, high-end book collector. Among rare book dealers, his library is famously referred to as the 'Johnson cache' or the 'David Enderton Johnson library'. He was known for tracking down and acquiring highly sought-after, valuable volumes-particularly pre-publication advanced review copies, bound proofs, and first editions personally signed by major mid-century literary figures like Vladimir Nabokov and C.S. Lewis. As an author and scholar, he published works focused on theology and scriptural literacy, most notably: Opening the New Testament: A Way to Read the Bible in Logical and Historical Order and Uppsala to Nairobi, 1968-1975: Report of the Central Committee to the Fifth Assembly of the World Council of Churches. (NOTE: It is most likely the 1708 New Testament edition given its proximity in date to the 1706 Book of Common Prayer it is bound with by the same publisher; however, the 1720 edition cannot be ruled out without carbon dating or some advanced method as the two editions were nearly identical.) ABOUT THEODORE BEZA Theodore Beza (1519 - 1605) was a French Calvinist Protestant theologian, reformer and scholar who played an important role in the Protestant Reformation. He was a disciple of John Calvin and lived most of his life in Geneva. Beza succeeded Calvin as the spiritual leader of the Republic of Geneva. He worked on many Greek New Testament editions, and his annotations greatly influenced the textual preservation, translation, and theological understanding of the New Testament. Between 1565 and 1604, he produced several editions in Greek with accompanying Latin translations and detailed annotations. Beza's editions served as primary textual sources for the Geneva Bible and influenced later translations including the 1611 King James Version.
