Leather. Etat : Good. Illustrated with engraved plates by Thomas Bewick, this is Matthew Consett's very scarce account of his pioneering journey to northern Lapland, and Scandinavia. The second edition of this very scarce work, which was first published earlier the same year in Stockton. This London re-issue of the Stockton edition has a cancel title page. A fascinating and detailed account of the travels of an Englishman in Scandinavia and northern Europe, relayed in a series of letters. Consett was the first Englishman to visit the northern part of Lapland. Illustrated with seven engraved plates - one featuring two images - from Thomas Bewick, including depictions of Tornio in Finland, Snow Grouse, and the women of Lapland. This was one of a few Thomas Bewick works in which he used copper engravings. Collated, complete. ESTC T75356 A4, a4, B-X4. Collated, complete. The text was actually ghostwritten by a young clergyman, John Brewster of Stockton, on the basis of notes taken by Consett and two of his friends during theirouting to Sweden. An intriguing work, the result of a wager struck with Sir Henry George Liddell that, within a give time, he couldn't accomplish a return trip to Lapland, bringing home with him two inuit women and two reindeer. Consett, who accompanied Liddell, provided notes (including the specious 'Lapland Song') which were written up by John Brewster, a historian of Stockton, where this title was first published (earlier in 1789). Bewick visited Ravensworth Castle, the Liddell's family seat, in order to draw the sledge, the Lapland women and the reindeer from life, the latter appealing to the artist's sensibilities to the extent that he preserved its antlers after its death, and hung them on the walls of his Gateshead house. On the flyleaf, a hand-written description states that this copy belonged to Sprangt's circulating library of Tunbridge Wells, which subsequently became Elliott's circulating library. First edition, a collection of Russian documents in English translation, all serving the compiler's attempt to cement the reputation of Peter the Great (who had died four years earlier) as a great leader and reformer. Thomas Consett was the first Anglican priest of the "British Factory", the association of British merchants who were resident in Russia. He spoke Russian, established a reputation as a scholar, built a vast Russian library, and moved in circles close to Peter, whom he was a great admirer of. Through these circles he accessed information not just ecclesiastic and scholarly, but also relating to political matters, making him a valued correspondent of the British government. The book was published with a clear purpose, using the printing of original documents to establish the place of Peter the Great as a revolutionary leader in Russia's history. "I have thought it for the purpose to lay a sure foundation of future history, by drawing out of the language of the country some authentick records which will, and must be allow'd to be proper materials for historians to work with hereafter, and which yet might have been lost or neglected" (p. ii). His collection includes Peter's Spiritual Regulation of 1721, which abolished the patriarchate and replaced it with the Holy Synod, and additional ecclesiastical regulations. Also included is a contemporary biography of Peter, documents relating to his death and funeral, and an account of his development of the Russian navy. ESTC T130057.
