La vida le llevó a ser hospiciano, marinero, boxeador, amotinado, dirigente del Partido Comunista, comandante del Batallón Británico de las Brigadas Internacionales, anticomunista convencido, pieza clave de la Defensa Civil de Londres, líder laborista, y se relacionó con cientos de personajes de lo más diverso, desde La Pasionaria hasta Jorge VI. En su momento, todas estas confesiones resultaron incómodas, quizás por su desgarradora sinceridad o por ir a contracorriente, pero es precisamente esto lo que, hoy en día, sigue confiriendo carácter a un testimonio tan original y tan alejado de lo políticamente correcto.
