Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Good - Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. The June, July, August & September 1953 issues of Verdict, vol 1 #s1 - 4, a mystery digest from the mid 1950s. GGA covers. Contents include parts 1 - 4 of 5 of Fer-de-Lance, the first Nero Wolfe novel by Rex Stout. Note - Verdict ceased publication in the US with the September issue. Consequently part 5 of the serial was never published. There was a British edition of the magazine that continued publication. However, I have not seen part 5 in that edition either. Trouble is My Business and Bay City Blues, novellas by Raymond Chandler, A Glass of Milk (A Peter Chambers Mystery) and Kudos From the Kid (A Peter Chambers novelette), by Henry Kane, His Heart Could Break, The Dead Mr Duck and Motive (John J Malone short stories), by Craig Rice (Georgiana Ann Randolph Craig), Don't Look Behind You and The Amazing Dip, stories by Fredric Brown, Marihuana and a Pistol by Chester M Himes, All at Once, No Alice and You Take Ballistics, stories by Cornell Woolrich, The Man Who Lost His Head and No Escape, stories ,by Bruno Fischer, Homecoming by Dorothy B Hughes, Suicide and Keeper of the Killed (A Johnny Liddell novelette), stories by Frank Kane, Big Boy Blues by Damon Runyon, QL.696.C9 (A Nick Noble story) by Anthony Boucher (William Anthony Parker White), Three O'Clock by William Irish (Cornell Woolrich), Dead Man by James M Cain, Material Witness by George Harmon Coxe, Vicious Circle by Evan Hunter (Salvatore Albert Lombino, Ed McBain), and others. Condition issues include: June - Light creases to the bottom right of the front cover; July - Light rubbing to the covers, light round, red stamp (appears to be Italian) at the top right of the back cover; August - roughness to the fore edge and some rubbing and light creases to the front cover, small loss a various spots along the spine; September - roughness to the fore edge of the front cover and some rubbing at the bottom of the spine, small loss at the bottom margin of the back cover (it looks like a varmint chewed on it) that diminishes and fades out by page 100. Note: Frank Kane is listed as an author on the front cover of the July issue but it doesn't have a story by him. A good to very good and hard to assemble set of the complete run of this title's issues with stories and installments by prominent and collectible authors.…

Materials presented drawn largely from the Jean-Noël Herli Archive. "Exhibition invitations? I've seen a few. Any working art critic inevitably acquires an extensive knowledge of this genre of printed ephemera. Heralding gallery and museum shows, invitations flood the mailbox, crowd the desk and all too often accumulate so intractably on the kitchen counter as to seem part of the decor. You can't live with them, and until the show is over, you can't throw them out. Still, life without such art-world byproducts would be a lot more difficult. Not only do they convey the important facts -- the who, when and where -- of shows that need to be seen. They're also advertisements bent on seducing us into attendance by being clever, eye-catching or provocative -- although sometimes they nip interest in the bud. (There's probably no art lover with mailing-list credentials who hasn't held up some gallery announcement and said, "Forget it!") Invitations are style statements in a minor key, ancillary artworks of a collective sort. Designed by artists, by graphic designers, by art dealers and museum curators -- usually a combination of the above -- they are the advance guard for the real thing. Their merit is judged in the very act of reading one's mail." -- Roberta Smith, "Art Invitations As Small Scraps Of History," New York Times, May 16, 1993. Very Good. Light edge wear. Contents clean and unmarked.…
