Grounded in the author's experiences as a medical advisor to the South Vietnamese army during the Vietnam War, it probes ethical concerns in medical evacuations, triage decisions, and the treatment of prisoners of war. It challenges the reader, particularly those in healthcare, to consider how ethical theories play into life or death wartime decisions. The book surveys the history of the ethics of warfare and the development of the Just War Theory, situating it within the broader context of Western civilization, and discusses its essential principles and interpretations. The Just War Theory, which holds that sometimes war is necessary to prevent greater evil but that even in war there are limits to acceptable behavior, is argued to be the theory most compatible with medical ethics and the emphasis therein on avoiding suffering. The book concludes by considering the insights Just War Theory offers for healthcare professionals, arguing that its principles can help guide moral decision-making on the battlefield.
