His most significant work includes The Ghost of Slumber Mountain (1918), a groundbreaking film that combined live-action and stop-motion techniques to depict dinosaurs and prehistoric life on screen. This film, marked one of the first times that dinosaurs were portrayed in realistic detail in cinema, influencing how prehistoric creatures were depicted in films for decades. Dawley's work with stop-motion not only inspired future animators and filmmakers but also helped pave the way for landmark productions like King Kong (1933). His blending of storytelling with innovative visual techniques contributed to the evolution of visual effects and demonstrated the potential of film as a medium for creative and fantastical storytelling. Stephen Czerkas, here Dawley's biographer, was an American paleontologist, cinematic sculptor, and co-founder of the Dinosaur Museum.
