Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a critical examination of Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage with a specific focus on the poet's depiction of Portugal. The author delves into the reasons behind Byron's animosity towards the Portuguese, exploring the historical and personal factors that influenced his negative portrayal. Through a close analysis of the poem's stanzas, the book sheds light on Byron's prejudices, biases, and misconceptions about the country and its people. The author argues that Byron's experiences during his brief stay in Lisbon, coupled with his preconceived notions about Portugal's role in the Peninsular War, shaped his harsh and inaccurate representation of the Portuguese character. The book also examines the broader literary and historical context of Byron's work, situating it within the Romantic movement and the ongoing debate about the relative merits of different European nations. Ultimately, this book offers a nuanced and thought-provoking reassessment of Byron's portrayal of Portugal, challenging the enduring influence of his negative stereotypes and providing a more balanced understanding of the complex relationship between the poet and the country he visited. Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. ~ The Goan scientist Daniel Dalgado, on the occasion of the XV International Congress of Medicine held in Lisbon in 1906, presented a paper entitled "The Climate of Lisbon, Mont'Estoril and Cintra". This book is intended to form a kind of companion to that paper and its first chapter provides an overview of the geography and topography of the entire Cascais area spread along the Tagus estuary, west of Lisbon in Portugal, while the subsequent chapters delve into the various climatic factors that influence the weather in this region. The aim was to show how this area was an excellent winter resort, by far superior to the seaside resorts then in vogue, such as Biarritz, Cannes or Nice. At the 13th International Congress of Hydrology, Climatology and Geology (Lisbon 1930), a paper was presented stating: "This is a region without winter. Here, after a mild and long summer and a short breezy and moderately chilly fall, there is an early and long spring that covers almost two thirds of the year. Passed the lightweight winter zip, the atmosphere clears, the breezes calm down and the sun shines in a transparent sky from morning to night." ~ Original wrappers ~ 70+[1]p ~ 22x15x1cm. ~ A near fine copy, very well preserved ~ LANGUAGE: English // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS //.…
