Softcover. Etat : FINE. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY World War I -This book is the first book since Charles Bean's "Official History" to provide a detailed narrative of the bloody and tragic battle for Hill 60, along with the other engagements that went on until the very last days at Anzac - viewed from both sides of the trenches. It also examines in detail the planning and execution of the evacuation of the troops from Anzac - the most successful part of the whole Gallipoli fiasco. David Cameron's detailed research and use of firsthand accounts including letters, diaries, and interviews, enables him to convey the confusion of battle while also telling a good story with a powerful emotional impact.'In early August with the failure of the August Offensive at Gallipoli the senior commanders still believed that victory was possible. To help prepare for a new offensive sometime in the first half on 1916 the allied forces attempted to straighten out the line connecting Suvla and Anzac at a small hillock called Hill 60.This tactically meaningless piece of Gallipoli real estate would cost the lives of thousands of men from both sides over a two week period. Many, with justification would argue that the fighting at Hill 60 was even worse than the fighting at Lone Pine of just a few weeks before. The end result was a huge casualty list for gaining a few hundred metres of ground. With this theGallipoli Campaign ground to a halt and the unspeakable was being spoken â" evacuation was in the air.Gallipoli: The Final Battles and Evacuation at Anzac is the first book since Charles Beanâs Official History to provide a detailed narrative of the bloody and tragic battle for Hill 60, along with the other engagements that went on until the verylast days at Anzac â" viewed from both sides of the trenches. It is also the first since Bean, to examine in detail the planning and execution of the evacuation of the troops from Anzac â"the most successful part of the whole Gallipoli fiasco. As in his previous books Cameronâs detailed research and use of firsthand accounts including letters, diaries, and interviews, enables him to convey the confusion of battle while also telling a good story with a powerful emotional impact.Dr David Cameron is a biological anthropologist and was formerly an Australian Research Council QEII Fellow at the Department of Anatomy & Histology, University of Sydney. He has written several books and this is his third on theGallipoli Campaign. In early 2003 he conducted a preliminary archaeological survey of the Anzac Gallipoli battlefields and held discussions with Turkish and Australian government officials about conservation issues relating to the Anzac area.First Edition. ix, 358 p. : ill., maps, ports, photographs. ; 23 cm. #101225 Includes bibliographical references (p. 337 - 344) and index. Softcover. Etat : FINE. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY World War II - On 21 July 1942, a large Japanese reconnaissance mission landed along the north-eastern coastline of Papua - it would soon turn into an all-out attempt to capture Port Morseby. This is the powerful story of the three weeks of battle by a small Australian militia force, the 39th Battalion, supported by the 1st Papua Infantry Battalion and the Royal Papuan Constabulary, to keep the Japanese at bay. Outnumbered by at least three to one, they fought courageously to hold the Kokoda Plateau - the gateway to the Owen Stanleys. Critically short of ammunition and food and stranded in the fetid swamps and lowland jungles, they did everything they could to keep the Kokoda airstrip out of Japanese hands. Not far away, and desperately trying to reach the Australians, were two groups of Anglican missionaries trapped behind enemy lines. With each passing day the parties grew, joined by lost Australian soldiers and downed American airmen. Theirs is a story of tragedy and betrayal. Using letters, diaries and other first-hand accounts, from friend and foe alike, leading military historian David W. Cameron, has for the first time written a detailed, compelling and provocative account of what occurred at the northern foot of the Owen Stanleys in late July and early August 1942. These are stories that deserve to be firmly embedded into the Kokoda legend. xiii, 417 pages, 8 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, maps, portraits ; 24 cm. First Edition. #180326 Australia. Softcover. Etat : New. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY World War II -"Japanese Major General Horii Tomitaro, commanding the South Seas Force, was after taking Kokoda Plateau in late July tasked with entering the Owen Stanley Range to capture Port Morseby. After the battles for Deniki and Isurava, his troops were pushing south through the mountains. The Australians under Brigadier Arnold Potts, however, were not in rout, but were involved in a determined fighting withdraw. After fighting a delaying action at Templeton's Crossing, the Australians took up a position along Mission Ridge, just south of Efogi Village. Horii and his battalions attacked and after two days of bloody hand-to-hand fighting, the Australians were forced to again withdraw. To the veterans who fought here the battle would become known as 'Butcher's Corner'. Following several further delaying actions, Potts and his men took up a position on Ioribaiwa Ridge, just 50-kilometres north of Port Moresby. His brigade by now numbered fewer than 300 men. Here they were reinforced with the men of the 25th Brigade. Horii decided that he would establish himself of Ioribaiwa Ridge as his base for operations against the township. After a week of fighting the Japanese cut through the centre right flank of the Australian 25th Brigade, forcing the Australians to fall back to Imita Ridge, the last defensible ridge in the Owen Stanleys immediately behind lay Port Moresby."First Edition. 543 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, maps, portraits ; 24 cm. #240525 Australia. Softcover. Etat : FINE. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY World War II -"The Japanese beachheads at Gona and Buna by the 3 January 1943 were finally in Australian and American hands after almost two months of desperate fighting. One beachhead, however, remained to be taken, the best defended, not only in terms of its deep defence and network of supporting bunkers and slit trenches, but also by its large deep swamps and jungle. Hundreds of men had already been killed - Australian and American - in trying to take Sanananda. It was recognised that this beahhead was the worst of the three battlefields. Isolated pockets of Australians and Americans confronted well dug in and camouflaged positions, often on small 'islands' in the fetid and crocodile infested swamps. It would be another three weeks before Sanananda fell to the Australian and American forces. It was appropriately described by Sergeant Bill Spencer, 2/9th Battalion as: 'A bastard of a place'."First Edition. 549 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm #240126 Includes bibliographical references (pages 504-510) and index.
