Soft cover. Etat : Good. First Edition. "FOREWORD. What is stated in this little work, by its generality, does not apply in every respect to all breeds, for they differ too much from one another with regard to form, size, etc. It cannot claim to be complete, as it aims merely to be a concise vademecum for every Kynologist who wishes to know a little more regarding the elementary knowledge concerning the physical structure and function of the dog. The standard taken was the normally built dog, in which, for example, no ingrained faults have been elevated to breed standards, nor has nature been violated by fashion. H. A. P. C. DE GROOT." 1. Overview: De beoordeling van den Hond is an early foundational manual for assessing dogs, combining anatomical description, standards for exterior conformation, principles of movement, and a system for assigning individual value. The book is illustrated with photographs and diagrams and is written in a didactic style aimed at breeders, judges, and serious students of canine form and function. 2. Content Summary: Anatomical Structure - Detailed chapters on skeletal and muscular features relevant to breed type and soundness; emphasis on proportions and functional anatomy. Exterior Conformation - Criteria for evaluating coat, head, limbs, chest, and overall balance; guidance on how outward appearance reflects underlying structure. Movement Theory - Analysis of gait, stride, and coordination; how movement reveals joint health, angulation, and endurance. Individual Value Meter - A practical scoring or rating system to quantify a dog's strengths and weaknesses for breeding and judging decisions. Illustrations and Photographs - Black-and-white plates showing examples of desirable and undesirable traits, plus captions explaining faults and merits. 3. Key Themes and Approach: Function over Fashion - The book consistently links form to function, arguing that correct anatomy and sound movement are the best predictors of a dog's working ability and breeding value. Systematic Assessment - Presents a structured, repeatable method for evaluation so different judges can reach comparable conclusions. Educational Emphasis - Written to teach: clear chapter divisions, examples, and practical checklists make it a training resource for judges and breeders. 4. Strengths and Limitations: Practical and detailed - Useful, hands-on guidance for real-world judging and breeding decisions. Illustrative support - Photographs and diagrams clarify technical points and make abstract criteria concrete. Historical context - Published in 1944 before the end of World War II; some terminology, breed standards, or veterinary understandings may be outdated. Narrow scope - Focused on conformation and evaluation; less attention to modern welfare science, genetics, or contemporary breeding ethics. THIS copy has some cover damage and pencil scribbles.
