Etat : Gut. XXIII, 252 S. Einband berieben. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - During the half century covered by the book, attitudes towards the practical arts of architecture and design changed dramatically. The Modern Movement was not just a question of turning from brick and stone to steel, concrete and glass. Nor was it a matter of simply rejecting eclecticism and ornament of all kinds for the stark new truths of rational construction and mechanised mass production. The real debate centred around such vital issues of the age as the place of ornament and the problem of past styles; the need for 'honesty' in craftsmanship and design; the proper way to react to machine production; the need to reflect social, economic and technological change; the problem of the vernacular and the preservation of national traditions and characteristics; the relationship between architecture and politics.
