Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good+. First American Edition. (no dust jacket) [general wear to edges and corners of covers, lower corners slightly bumped, spine somewhat faded, age-toning and light soiling to edges of text block, one-time owner's single name in ink on front endpaper]. A novel embodying "the conflict of two ways of living -- the sophistication of city civilization, and the clean simplicity of the Australian bush." A scarce work (also published under the title "Taipo") by this New Zealand-born writer (1894-1962), who later became a prominent speaker and activist on behalf of the Communist Party of Australia, and was well-known for her outspoken opinions on sexuality and women's rights. This novel, about a swell fellow from the outback who inherits a fortune, and is subsequently "caught by a worldly woman attracted by his money and his physical strength," is concerned, as was most of Devanny's fiction, with the economic, social and sexual dynamics at work in male-female relationships. [NOTE that the quoted passages here are from the book's dust jacket, which is NOT present on this particular copy.] Devanny's first novel, "The Butcher Shop," had been banned in New Zealand, Australia, Germany and parts of the U.S.; in 1929 she moved with her family to Australia, where she was deeply involved with the Communist Party until she was expelled in 1941, ostensibly for "moral degeneracy." She later lamented that her devotion to the Party and its causes had prevented her from realizing her full potential as a writer (although she did publish over a dozen books, both fiction and non-fiction).

Ajouter au panierSurikov, V. (illustrateur). the first Russian edition of Sugar Heaven, the socially significant novel by Jean Devanny, first published in Australia in 1936. Issued in Moscow in 1963 by the State Publishing House for Fiction and translated from English by T. Redko, this edition introduced Soviet readers to one of the key works of Australian proletarian literature. Set against the background of the 1935 sugarcane workers' strike in Queensland, the novel explores themes of labour struggle, political awakening, solidarity, and social justice. Devanny, a prominent left-wing writer and political activist, blends documentary realism with a powerful human narrative, portraying both the harsh realities of rural working life and the moral transformation of her characters. As the first Russian translation and publication, this edition holds particular historical and bibliographic significance, reflecting the cultural exchange between Soviet and Australian progressive literature during the Cold War period. The book is preserved in an unusual original binding with flaps, showing some rubbing along the folds. The text block is slightly loosened, the spine has been discreetly reinforced, and there is darkening to the front fore edge. Otherwise, the volume remains in very good condition.
