°°° RARE AND BIBLIOPHILLY BOUND EXTENSIVE EPITAPH OF THE CELEBRATED ARTIST: Publisher's titled vellum-tinted papercover, bound in a possibly slightly later gilt-titled night-blue 3/4-morocco binding with black-and-blue marbled panels, gilt topedge green marker-ribbon and colourful marbled endpapers, 3 additional blank largepaper-sheets with watermark 'Hallines Dambricourt Frères' before and after the publ. papercover; 4to.(28 x 19 cm). - *) ''When it came time to auction off everything that made up the studio of our dear and missed Diaz, his studies which he showed us with such joy and happiness, the paintings and drawings of his friends and those of the old masters whom he most loved, these works of art for which he had such a great passion, it seemed to us that we would be grateful to reproduce, in a short summary, the opinions and judgments of our most authoritative critics, opinions and judgments formulated at different times in this very full artistic career. We have therefore borrowed from Th. Silvestre his biography; from Thoré, Th. Gautier, MM. Ed. About and J. Claretie their appreciations on the works exhibited at the various Salons, or on the general work of the painter; then from MM. Albert Wolff, Émile Bergerat, E. Véron, Ph. Burty, E. Gonzalès, Privat, their farewells to the artist whom we have just lost. . .''(translated Introduction, followed by a detailed chronological list of Diaz' works exhibited ''. . . aux divers Salons de 1831 à 1850.''). - Corners of the binding slightly rubbed, frontpanel with superficial horizontal scratch, some of the additional blank endpapers slightly foxy. A BEAUTIFUL COPY; inner frontpanel with engraved 19th-century pictorial exlibris 'Alexis Martin'((1834-1904, Literate and Collector, Author of 'Le Bibliophile amoureux', 1866), signed 'Aglaüs Bouvenne'(1829-1903, Engraver, also for Victor Hugo). --- DIAZ WAS BORN IN BORDEAUX to Spanish parents, became an orphan at the age of ten and lost one of his legs after his foot was bitten by a reptile in Meudon-Wood, near Sèvres where he started his artistic career at the age of fifteen in the Porcelain-Studios. He also spent much time at Barbizon, near the Fontainebleau Forest, where he painted some of his most famous works. One of his teachers and friends in Paris was Francois Souchon and he admired the painter Théodore Rousseau. Diaz exhibited at many 'Paris Salons' and the World Expo of 1855, and became 'Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur' in 1851; Auguste Renoir once said ''My hero was Diaz.''. Diaz' paintings and drawings are held by the Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other famous institutions. - THE CONTENT IN DETAIL: (to be continued. . . --- **) A Photoglyptie (or 'Woodburytype') is a photomechanical printing process to create high quality continuous-tone images with surfaces that show a slight relief-effect, a mold-produced copy of an original photographic negative. It had been invented by the pioneering English photographer Walter Bentley Woodbury (1834-1885), one of the earliest photographers in Australia and the Dutch East Indies and was in use during the final third of the 19th century, most commonly for illustrating fine books with photographic portraits. …
