It spans a wide spectrum over the years, from the early days in Kent in 1960, through the many hours on the lineside on the Surrey Hills line and the South Western main line, to the last frantic years of steam on the Southern, and the current steam scene, as well as the privileged and exciting times spent riding on the footplate of steam locomotives. It majors on the author's main railway passions of steam locomotives, train running performance, including modern motive power and all matters Southern. The quality of most of the very early photographs isn't good enough for reproduction but better cameras enabled improved images to be obtained during the most prolific years of 1961 to 1963 which fortunately enabled the last of the classic ex Southern Railway designs, such as the King Arthurs, Lord Nelson and Schools classes to be captured for posterity. This book contains 150 black and white photographs ranging across the Southern Region starting in the east and then moving gradually westwards to include a few taken on the withered arm' in Devon and Cornwall. Most though are taken in the areas just south and south west of London and include such once popular locations such as the footpaths at South Croydon and Wimbledon. Trains such as the Bournemouth Belle and the Schools class hauled 525 pm London Bridge to Reading and Lymington Pier boat trains are shown to good effect. The vast majority of the photographs are previously unpublished and this book will appeal to all Southern devotees. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. AUTHOR: The author was born in South London and developed a love of trains and steam locomotives from an early age. Most of his career was spent in the transport industry, both public and private sector, including owning and running his own bus company. He spent many hours covering the end of Southern Steam and, following this chased down remaining steam in Europe but also developing a serious interest in so called modern traction. Hardback, 184 pages After the end of steam on the Southern in July 1967, the author concentrated primarily on recording the Southern scene, to start with in black and white and then from 1972 in colour. In so doing he built up a huge collection of slides for the period 1972 to 1988 concentrating on the lines close to his Kent home or in the London area but also with some images taken on the Central and Western Division main lines. The book contains more than 260 high quality colour images of second generation rolling stock set out by class of electric or diesel multiple units and locomotives, ranging from 4 SUBs and EPBs through Hastings Diesel units to Class 73 Electro-Diesels, a total of fifteen classes all told. The severe winters of 1985 and 1987 are also included and Departmental stock isn't forgotten.
