Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the Scottish Paraphrases, a collection of Scripture songs that became a cornerstone of Scottish religious literature, almost as important as the Metrical Version of the Psalms. The author explores the origins of these hymns, tracing their evolution from early "Gude and Godlie Ballatis" and the 16th-century addition of "Spiritual Songs" to the Psalm Book. You'll learn about the failed attempts to revise and publish Scripture Songs in the 17th century, culminating in the work of Patrick Simson, whose "Spiritual Songs or Holy Poems" became the subject of official Church scrutiny. The author then guides you through the complex process of the Scottish Church's attempt to create and publish an official set of Scripture paraphrases, highlighting the debates and considerations involved in this important undertaking. The book concludes by revealing the eventual adoption of the Paraphrases, solidifying their place within Scottish religious tradition. This work provides a rich historical account of the creation and reception of these beloved hymns, offering a unique glimpse into the religious landscape of Scotland.
