Soft cover. Etat : New. Contents: Introduction. North Bengal: A Cultural Mosiac. NBU: The Early History. NBU Marches Ahead. NBU Today. Programmers of NBU: A Snapshot. Conclusion. Appendix. In 1962, The University of North Bengal came into being. A huge clearing covering about 340 acres of land mass in the densely forested foothills of the Himalayas became the ideal location for it. The people of the northern half of the state of West Bengal, the northern districts of adjoining Bihar and western districts of Assam saw it as a great leap forward in the field of higher education because there was dearth of institutions in the entire regions which could offer post graduate education and research facilities to aspiring scholars. Several eminent academics, some of them from abroad, joined the institution soon after it saw the light of the day. No wonder the University started producing scores of scholars who distinguished themselves in various fields of research. But until now not much was known to the outsiders about the history of the institutions, the wonderful facilities it offers to students, and the achievement of the scholars in the last few decades. A brilliant scholar who was a Professor of Chemistry in NBU, a columnist for some well-known newspapers, author and an administrator for two decades in the post of Registrar of this University, took up the job of writing a short history of the University. His account is revealing and captivating.
