Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fine. One of 500 copies printed by Lawton Kennedy, a noted Bay Area printer. Original publisher's beige cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Several leaves are unopened. 5 3/4" x 8 3/4." Eighty-four pages, complete. A few black-and-white illustrations, complete. The illustrations were taken from the author's drawings as they originally appeared in his journal. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Covers are clean and intact overall but have slight discoloration and a few small marks or smudges. A Fine copy. This book contains the printed text of the journal kept by Evans S. McComas (1839-1907), a pioneer who traveled over the Oregon Trail from Iowa City to Oregon in 1862, from 1862-1867. The journals are organized by year and are printed chronologically. The journal for 1862 documents McComas's journey from Iowa City to Auburn, Oregon. His diary is replete with observations of natural scenery and descriptions of colorful events and encounters with different people. Some of the journals are relatively brief. For example, McComas's journal for 1867 is only about two pages in length. In his Introduction, Martin Schmitt highlights some of the features of McComas's diary. Schmitt says that while McComas was one of many pioneers who kept diaries, his is unique in that it is one of the few accounts documenting Auburn which was located in Oregon's northeast mining region. As with other pioneer diarists, McComas also had unique experiences by virtue of him being an individual and having chance encounters on his journey. One example of this is a dispute he had with a soldier which culminated in McComas shooting the soldier but without serious injury. The incident was apparently settled after an explanation to the soldier's superior officer. McComas also had various occupational ventures such as trying his hand at mining and founding the Whirlwind Remedy Company. Through this company, he sold Whirlwind Kidney and Rheumatic Remedy, a medicine purportedly made from a recipe given to him by a Cayuse friend, Chief Whirlwind. McComas also sold evaporated salts from Medical Lake, Washington. In the back is a series of pioneer ballads as they appeared in his diary, at least one of which was composed by him, "My Journey O'er the Plains." His charming sketches also offer rare documentation of life in the Powder Mines. Back colophon: "500 Copies, Designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy.".…

Beige cloth, spine lettered in gilt. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 84 pages; Charles L. Camp, was a noted palaeontologist and zoologist, working from the University of California, Berkeley. Camp was also an important bibliographer and historian of Western America, remembered for many works, especially his biography of American pioneer James Clyman, which Bernard De Voto called "one of the half-dozen classics in the field," and the third edition of Henry R. Wagner's, The Plains and the Rockies, published in 1953, which Camp annotated heavily.…

First Edition, Limited Edition. 1 of 500 copies designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy. Introduction by Martin Schmitt. Illustrated with 3 plates reproducing sketches by McComas. Near Fine; head of spine just a bit pushed and a notable previous owner's stamp on front pastedown (see Clyde Arbuckle, below), only very small signs of wear elsewhere. See scans. Mintz 314 - McComas traveled to Oregon to escape from involvement in the Civil War. Mintz notes that "he tells of the trip, which, considering the alternative, he was prepared to enjoy. The illustrations, from the author's sketches, are apparently the only known contemporary record of life in the Powder River Mines. Nicely printed by Lawton Kennedy." For a bit of association status, front pastedown bears the stamp of Clyde Arbuckle, who died in January of 1998, was an expert on San Jose history, and was the author of "The History of San Jose" and "Santa Clara County Ranchos". l-49n. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Black, cloth-covered hardback measuring 11 1/4 in. x 8 3/4 in. x1 1/2 in. Roughly over 300 pp. - most likely more. Text consists of xerographic (?) historical articles, memoirs, recollections of citizens of towns in Union County, Oregon, local lore, genealogical histories, founding family's tales and anecdotes, etc. Sample article titles include: "The Chinese in Union County", by Frank Jasper, February 1960, Family Histories, Indian Wars, Early Bands in Union County, The Village Blacksmith; The Crossroads at Lochow Lochow, etc. etc. Two-inch felt pen mark to front and rear endpapers. This comprehensive gathering of recollections would seem to be THE place to begin when one wishes to gain an overview of the historical underpinnings and the cultural evolution of interconnected pioneer-communities, across four or more generations, or seek out the roots of one's pioneer roots We speculate, due to the numerous actual photograph (copies) tipped into this book, that it might have been the master, either for a never-published book, or for a book which had only a very limited number of copies. An extraordinary record of The American West, Oregon, and individual retellilngs, of the individuals and families who forged the communities which today yet thrive. ".Possibly one of McComas's most interesting adventures was the manufacturing and sale of his 'Whirlwind Kidney and Rheumatic Remedy", which we will briefly describe: McComas had befriended Chief Whirlwind of the Umatilla Indians by helping him avoid having his long hair cut. Whirlwind was very proud of his waist length hair. In turn Whirlwind has come to McComas's aid in a land deal. The who men were close friends. Whirlwind gave McComas the formula for an Indian Medicine made from native Bluemountain plants. McComas manufactured the medicine and put it on the market with a flashy advertising campaign. It was listed by wholesale drug firms of the West coast and continued to sell while the production continued.".…
