Paperback. Etat : Used. Ah, ?The Teacher? by EB Castle, a book that dares to ask the question: what happens when academic rigor meets the tumultuous world of pedagogy in the year 1970? Published by the prestigious Oxford University Press, this tome is as much a treatise on the nuances of education as it is a portal into a bygone era where bell-bottoms ruled and the only thing more convoluted than the syllabus was the hair on your average educator?s head. In this enlightening work, Castle seems to channel the spirits of long-forgotten lecturers, armed with a chalkboard full of theories and a coffee cup perpetually brimming with lukewarm caffeine. One can only assume that this book was meant to be a lifeline for beleaguered teachers battling a sea of disinterested students and the impending doom of standardised testing. It?s as if Castle took the notion of ?teaching? and turned it inside out?like a sock that?s been through the wash too many times, the pages are filled with insights that are almost too deep to comprehend. The cover, which is showing signs of the heavy pedagogical lifting it has endured, features a rather stern-looking individual who could easily be mistaken for a Victorian-era headmaster or a slightly more hip version of your uncle who insists on explaining quantum physics at family gatherings. There?s an air of authority about it that might make you question your own educational choices and, perhaps, your life choices in general. Inside, one could expect a delightful mishmash of educational philosophy, practical tips, and perhaps a few rants about the decline of students? attention spans?way before TikTok made its grand entrance. EB Castle?s prose is laden with the weight of knowledge, delivered in a tone that dances somewhere between an enthusiastic lecturer and a disillusioned, caffeine-fuelled night owl. The irony lies in the fact that you might not retain much of it after you close the book, but isn?t that just the way with education? Potential readers, brace yourselves for an odyssey through the minds of educators who likely considered themselves the unsung heroes of society. Castle has crafted an experience that might make you feel like you?re back in a lecture hall, fighting the urge to nap as you ponder the philosophical implications of teaching arithmetic to uninterested youths. One can almost hear the echoes of ?Where?s this going?? as you flip through the chapters. What can you expect from ?The Teacher?? Well, here?s a brief list of possible outcomes: A newfound appreciation for your high school teachers, especially if they were not like the one featured on the cover. A sense of nostalgia for the days when ?in-depth discussions? didn?t involve scrolling through social media. A realization that maybe your career in education was not in the cards, and that?s perfectly alright. An urge to rediscover your own textbooks, if only to give them a good talking-to. A collection of philosophical questions that will haunt you well into the night. Condition: Used. This book has been lovingly thumbed through and scribbled in, possibly by previous readers who were struggling to grasp its contents or simply wanted to leave their mark on the literary landscape. Dog-eared corners and a faint smell of old coffee suggest that the author?s wisdom has seeped into every page, creating an almost mystical reading experience. The spine is cracked but holding together like a determined teacher on their last nerve, and the occasional note in the margins reads like a secret conversation with a fellow educator. In conclusion, ?The Teacher? stands as a testament to the struggles and triumphs of those who dare to impart knowledge. Whether you?re a teacher, a former student, or the bewildered parent of a teenager, this book will undoubtedly provide a perplexing yet entertaining read. So why not grab a copy from Crappy Old Books? After all, you might just find a little piece of educational nostalgia waiting for you, nestled among the literary relics of yesteryear.…

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Good. Education is one of humanity?s favourite subjects. Every generation is convinced the previous generation did it wrong, the next generation is doomed, and somewhere in the middle a committee is commissioned to investigate why children no longer know what anyone thinks they ought to know. Ancient Education and Today is a fascinating reminder that these arguments are far older than most people realise. Written by E.B. Castle and published in this 1967 Pelican edition, the book explores the educational systems of the ancient world and compares them with modern ideas about learning, teaching and civilisation. It turns out that long before league tables, online learning platforms and endless debates about curriculum reform, the Greeks and Romans were already worrying about what young people should be taught and whether society was heading in entirely the wrong direction. One of the great pleasures of this book is the comforting discovery that educational arguments are apparently immortal. Ancient philosophers complained about the youth of their day. Teachers worried about standards. Parents fretted about preparation for adult life. Students looked for ways to avoid difficult work. In other words, very little appears to have changed over the past two thousand years except the availability of Wi-Fi. Castle examines the educational traditions of classical societies, exploring how they shaped citizens, leaders, thinkers and soldiers. Education in the ancient world was not simply about passing examinations. It was often intended to produce a particular type of person, someone capable of fulfilling a role within society. Whether that role involved governing an empire, debating philosophy or commanding a legion varied considerably, but the ambition was remarkably consistent. There is a delicious irony in reading a book about ancient education from the perspective of the modern age. The ancient Greeks developed systems designed to produce wise and virtuous citizens. Modern education often seems designed to ensure nobody forgets their password for the online portal. Somewhere between Socrates and spreadsheet training, civilisation appears to have become rather more complicated. What prevents the book from becoming dry is its broader perspective. This is not merely a catalogue of old schools and forgotten lessons. It is an exploration of enduring questions. What is education actually for? Should it train people for work, cultivate character, encourage independent thought or preserve cultural values? The fact that these questions remain unresolved is perhaps the strongest evidence of their importance. As with many Pelican Books, there is a wonderful confidence in the writing. This was an era when publishers believed ordinary readers were perfectly capable of engaging with serious ideas, and authors responded by producing thoughtful works that informed without patronising. The result is a book that feels scholarly but approachable, intelligent without becoming intimidating. This 1967 edition now occupies an amusing position in history. A book comparing ancient education with the modern world has itself become part of educational history. Readers today can observe not only the ancient systems being discussed but also the assumptions and concerns of the 1960s. It is effectively a historical study wrapped inside another historical study, rather like finding a Roman coin inside a Victorian biscuit tin. This copy is in good condition and is sold by Crappy Old Books. It remains a rewarding read for anyone interested in history, education, philosophy or the recurring suspicion that every generation is convinced it has invented problems that humanity has actually been discussing since antiquity. An engaging journey through centuries of educational thought. Proof that while classrooms, technologies and teaching methods may change, the eternal question of what children ought to learn remains gloriously unresolved.…
