Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book traces the founding, evolution, and eventual demise of the Ark, a social and intellectual hub founded in Cleveland in 1836. Initially a meeting place for those interested in the study of natural sciences, it gradually became a magnet for artists, writers, and other intellectuals. This book primarily draws on first-hand accounts, letters, and newspaper articles to provide insights into the Ark's origins, membership, rituals, and lasting influence on Cleveland's cultural landscape. The author places the Ark within the larger context of 19th-century America's burgeoning interest in the natural world and the rise of scientific societies. By reconstructing the Ark's history, this book sheds light on the significance of such institutions in fostering intellectual exchange and community-building. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …
