Fully illustrated with over eighty glorious colour photographs taken by the author, this book provides valuable insight into one of the most traditional and yet most mysterious of British pastimes. Clouds of mist rising from a deserted river in the early morning. Sparkling water and a distant angler casting in the afternoon sunlight. The excitement of the day's first bite. Freshwater fishing provides the opportunity for both contemplation and excitement, the angler pitting his wits against his quarry in the midst of a beautiful natural landscape. Tales from the River Bank examines the art, of fishing from a fresh perspective. In this book, and the BBC television series which it accodipanies, John Bailey shows how, with a greater understanding of the behaviour and biological make-up of different types of fish, it is possible to become a more intuitive and successful angler. Concentrating on Britain's major freshwater fish - barbel, chub, trout, carp, salmon, eel, pike, tench, rudd, roach and grayling - each chapter focuses on the habits of a particular species and provides practical advice and tricks of the trade based directly on the author's own experience. There is. also a selection of information boxes which offer guidance on all aspects of angling, from choosing the correct tackle and baits to proven 'techniques for catching elusive fish. Size: Sm 4to. Numerous Colour Phographs (illustrateur).…

The Folio Society edition of Selected Poems by John Betjeman, edited by Alan Powers, is a beautifully produced volume that celebrates the lyrical charm and emotional depth of one of Britain's most beloved 20th-century poets. The selection draws from Betjeman's Collected Poems (4th edition, John Murray, 1979), offering a curated journey through his most resonant and representative works. Powers' editorial introduction provides thoughtful context, noting Betjeman's ability to craft verse that is "sensitive, intelligent, frequently funny, but more often very sad"—a rare blend in an age dominated by free verse. The illustrations by Peter Bailey complement Betjeman's nostalgic and often melancholic tone, evoking English suburbia, churchyards, and seaside towns with gentle wit and affection. Ref H 3. Introduction: "John Betjeman was probably the most popular poet in Britain in the Twentieth century, but this does not mean that his work is simple or easy to explain. To write verse that rhymed and scanned was an achievement in its self in the age of vers libre; to make it sensitive, intelligent, frequently funny, but more often very sad, was the last thing one could have expected. The received view of Betjeman's poetry would enumerate suburbs, Amazonian tennis girls, the Church of England and Cornish seascapes among the subject matter, but although these are present there is much else besides." Another stunning book from The Folio Society.…
