Softcover. Etat : Fine. First. John Gordon "Jack" McClelland CC (1922 - 2004) was a Canadian publisher. He was known for promoting Canadian writers as president of the McClelland and Stewart publishing house. He began working for McClelland and Stewart, his father's company, in 1946, becoming president in 1961. Under his control…, the company promoted Canadian literature and encouraged Canadian authors such as Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Leonard Cohen, Marian Engel, Farley Mowat and Mordecai Richler. He introduced a popular series of Canadian authors in paperback, making Canadian writing more accessible to the general public. "I decided that I didn't want to be dependent on foreign agencies," he would recall. "I saw that a logical decision in London or New York could cut our volume in half. A Canadian nationalist was born overnight." This copy is fine in color, photo-illustrated wrappers. A single name "Maynard" in ink on the half title page. No other marks or damage at all. Inscribed by McClelland on the title page. Signed.

Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. **Bundle Up & Save On Postage** Remainder Mark Bottom Edge, otherwise a very nice soft cover copy with French flaps, without flaw. 6 X 9" 300 pages. From the publication of Gabrielle Roy's Tin Flute in 1947 to Michael Ondatje's Running in the Family in 1984, Jack McClelland presided o…ver the creation of the Canadian canon, and his letters are the most revealing evidence of his influence. Whether counseling Margaret Laurence on the title for The Stone Angel or defending his firms' decision to publish Leonard Cohen's Beautiful Losers, the letters reveal a thoughtful and insightful editorial mind.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. First Edition. 2001, second printing. 606pp. Frontispiece portrait of the poet. Book and unclipped dust jacket are in excellent condition with no inscriptions. "By the time Al Purdy succumbed to lung cancer at his waterfront home in Sidney BC on April 21, 2000, he was… universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest writers Canada has produced. In five decades as a published author he had produced over forty books and received innumerable distinctions, including two Governor General's Awards and the Order of Canada. A hands-on writer who delighted in co-producing specialty publications and small press titles in addition to his major collections with leading publishers, Purdy left a massive and diverse body of work, much of it long unavailable to the public."The Collected Poems," edited by Purdy critic Sam Solecki with the full participation of the author, for the first time brings all of Purdy's poetic writings together in one volume, including all his later books, work previously uncollected from earlier periods as well as several excellent new poems he completed in the months before his death. It is, as he said, everything he wished to be remembered for.".

Paperback. Etat : Fine. First Edition, First Printing. An association copy and one of the last books to be published in Purdy's lifetime, signed on the pre-title page in black ink by Purdy to David Herreshoff, the Poet Laureate of Kaslo, BC "For Jessie & David & vise versa / with cordial good wishes / Al Purdy". Printed glossy w…raps, 8vo (9 inches tall), pp. [1]-131, [132 - blank]. Front cover with an image of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. From the back cover "A hundred years from now, one of the few Canadian poets whose work will still be read is Al Purdy." . . "to Paris Never Again is Purdy's first collection of new writing 's since 1994: fifty-one poems plus "Home Country," an essay of nostalgic anecdotes that provides a facinating background to much of the poetry. Here is the work of a major poet in the maturity of a long, eventful life; a voice steeped in the wisdom of age, yet responsive to the subtlest shadings of experience."
