This handsomely produced Batsford anthology brings together poems of the Romantic period with the paintings and drawings that so often shared the same subjects and sensibility. The double aim, set out in the introduction, is both to give pleasure through the juxtaposition of memorable (and sometimes unfamiliar) verse and pictures, and to show how closely the poets and painters of the age responded to the same themes: night and nightmare, storm-lashed coasts, ruined abbeys, moonlight, the Lakes, the Alps, and the Italian landscape. He specialised in carefully chosen thematic collections that paired verse with fine reproductions of related art, producing attractive, accessible books that remain popular with collectors of both poetry and illustrated volumes.
