The first two papers on Bangladesh introduce the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and examine reflection of communalism in the writings of Bangladesh. Bhutanese Lo-Zey and a novel The Circle of Karma are the subject matter of Bhutanese section. There are two papers on India, one analysing contemporary trends in Indian fiction and another expatiating upon violence, identity and narrative as tools of eventual and cathartic communal harmony. There is a survey of Maldivian poetry and a note on the poetry of Nepal. Pakistan figures prominently as the book has three papers analysing three novels and the fourth on partition fiction. The book has analysed two novels of Sri Lanka and a Sri Lankan novelist himself has examined the image of India in Sri Lankan fiction. Besides these, there are three thematic papers on the cultural aspects of SAARC.".

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Dust Jacket Included. The present volume contains original scientific articles about the changing roles of women in developing countries of the Middle East. Each sociologist in this volume attempts to focus on the past traditional roles of Muslim women. He also identifies directions of change rate of chan…ge and the causes of change in womens roles in Muslim countries. The family sociologists also try to point out that these recent changes in the status of Muslim women may recast marriage and the family in new and different molds. Since the original articles cover a uniform series of topics comparisons are possible. This collection of articles will be valuable in comparative study of women and others interested in changing sex roles and social change in third world countries. In particular sociologists and other social scientists in western and non western countries are more likely to benefit from these changing roles of Muslim women. (jacket) 205 pp.

Soft cover. Etat : New. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed by the Parliament of India in December 2019, promises citizenship to migrants of the 'Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian community from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan'. By excluding Muslims from the list and not extending the promise to refugee…s from any of India's non-Muslim-majority neighbours, the CAA makes religion the basis of citizenship for the first time in the history of the Republic. Many fear that this Act, coupled with a countrywide National Register of Citizens (NRC), will eventually be used to disenfranchise India's Muslims, or to trap them in a permanent state of fear and insecurity, which has been the fate of millions of Bengali-origin Muslims of Assam. This Land Is Mine, I Am Not of This Land brings together a comprehensive selection of essays that deal with the theoretical, political and subjective aspects of this issue. The first section traces the evolution of citizenship in India. The following section deals with the peculiar case of Assam. Covered here are the bureaucratic travesties unleashed in the name of protecting the state from 'external aggression' as well as their sobering human cost. The concluding sections expose the superfluousness of the National Population Register (NPR), and pose serious questions on the constitutionality of the CAA. The book argues that with a key value like citizenship in question, it is not just the destinies of India's citizens but the very democratic foundation of the Republic that is at stake.

Hardcover. Etat : New. 1st Edition. This is a book about the Kashmir valley-lacerated, wrathful, aflame. The authors travelled across it in the winter of 2016, during a journey undertaken in a spirit of solidarity with the people of the region. It is a disturbing account of children blinded by pellet guns, of a government in a b…itter state of undeclared war with its own civilian populations, of the rage of stone-throwing youth and the hubris of military generals. The book also attempts a concise history of the conflict in the valley and makes a strong plea for humanity, for fairness, and for justice. The authors argue, there should be no denying a just peace to the embattled people of the valley. The concluding words of the book sum it up precisely: 'We are told that a nation cannot be strong if it is ethical or compassionate; that these are despicable signs of weakness; that a strong state is a state that is without morality or mercy. Who will tell them how wrong they are? That it is only the weak who fell those who are weaker, whose hearts are empty of mercy, who celebrate the weeping of children. The truly strong are those who have the courage to be kind and just.'.

Hardcover. Etat : New. Human development is the process of enlarging possibilities, to enhance human choices. In a developing country like India several initiatives have been undertaken in rural areas to do so. However, after seven decades of planned development, several challenges still remain. One of the major factors for the…successful implementation of human development policies is the active participation of the people for whom the development initiatives are meant. Strategies for Human Development and People's Participation in Rural India unravels the in-depth dynamics of people's participation in the processes of human development initiatives in rural India. This book analyses contemporary perspectives and the present scenario of human development; prospects and challenges in human development initiatives and people's participation in human development initiatives in rural India, related to education, employment, health, livelihood, nutrition, and grassroots governance. Strategies for Human Development and People's Participation in Rural India will be of immense interest to researchers, bureaucrats, policy makers, planners, practitioners, academia, and those interested in rural development and public policy.
