"The Corwin was a steamer belonging to the US Treasury Department that sailed the waters of Alaska protecting US interests at sea-otter hunting grounds. For its June 1881 voyage it was charged with making inquiries into the fate of the three vessels and rendering appropriate aid. The Corwin was sent out partly as a relief expedition for the Jeannette and two missing whaling vessels, Mount Wallaston and Vigilant. Jeannette, commanded by Commander George W. De Long, had sailed to the Bering Strait in 1879 to explore the Arctic Ocean, but went missing. Corwin was commanded by Captain C. L. Hooper, and the cruise went to the Arctic Ocean along Northwest Alaska. By Hooper's invitation, John Muir accompanied the voyage. Muir studied and wrote about the glaciation of the region and its vegetation. He collected plants at many locations on the coasts of Alaska and Siberia, and on St. Lawrence, Wrangell, and Herald Islands" (from the Smithsonian website).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Trade Edition. 390pp. Octavo [21 cm] Grayish-green cloth with an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover, the title in white ink on the backstrip and front board, and a white ink stamped vignette on the backstrip. Mild age toning to text. Twelve plates with Frontispiece. Eleven images (with 8 by Herbert Gleason). John Muir (1838-1914) was a well-known naturalist, preservationist, author, and founder of the Sierra Club. In the 1890's, the exploitation of the West's resources and natural beauty and use of Federal lands became a cause of concern for conservationists. Muir's many articles and books heavily influenced the public and policy makers to expand protection, conservation, and preservation of forests and public lands. Along with Muir's second book, "Our National Parks" (1901), his efforts to influence Presidents and generate public support have helped shape the National Park system in the United States and abroad. This book is a trade edition that was published at the same time as the limited large print edition in September 1918. Also during this period, the publisher, Houghton Mifflin, issued a 10 volume set of "The Writings of John Muir" in several formats and bindings and included "Steep Trails.".
