Hardcover. Etat : Fair. (iv) (printer's blanks), 232pp., (iv) (printer's blanks). Pagination errors on 3 pages. This edition is taken from that published in London by Walthoe, in 1723. Many scholars now consider this anti-Jesuit text a forgery. It appears to have been widely distributed in an attempt to discredit the Jesuit Order. This is a small volume, measuring approximately 6" x 3.25" x .75". Introductory matter is in English, with the body of the text in Latin/English on facing pages. Bound in original, light brown cloth. Original paper label to spine. Cloth admits to a number of small chips and short tears, along with some general medium wear. Paper label admits to chipping, with loss of several letters. One can still understand what the title is. 8 leaves admit to damage, with some loss of text. Approximately 15-20 words are missing, though with a minimal knowledge of Latin or by reading the facing page in English, and/or reading in context, one can determine what the words are. Wear is distributed thus: lower portions of 4 pages are missing small pieces across bottom. The other 4 pages each have small holes on each page. Several additional leaves admit to short, unobtrusive tears at extremities. At some point, 2 pages had adhered together near gutter, such that there was a minimal loss of text, perhaps two letters of a word. Foxing is present in varying degrees, with heaviest foxing to early and late printer's leaves. Light internal soiling. Despite wear, the volume maintains much of its original charm and is actually a pleasant copy to hold. N.B., aforementioned pages with missing text are Pp. 49-50; 73-74, 167-168, 185-186. L (Mecklembourgeois) / Fondateur de l'Institution Biblique Stéréotype / de Paris / Membre . . . / . . . / à Paris le 20 Juin 1813.'' --- Lutheran Pastor Frédéric Léo from Mecklenburg-Germany was sent as 'pastor-suffragan' of the Lutheran Consistory to Paris in 1811 to spread the protestant view of christianity in the catholic heart of France, and with the support of Frederic Louis Crownprince of Mecklenburg - to whom he dedicated this particular bibliophile copy - raised funds for the massprint of bibles (not only) from the crownprince's former brother-in-law Tsar Alexander I., who himself founded of the 'Bible Society of Russia'. Together with the famous french printer Firmin Didot, who perfectionized the stereotype-printing process to produce a very large number of pages from 1 plate in lasting good quality and economically successful, Léo started the mass-production of Ostervald's New Testament in 1813 which in quality and number by far exceeded earlier stereotype bible-editions in Germany (Canstein/Halle) and England (Stanhope/Cambridge), although not many seem to have survived resp. can be found in trade. This was the initial moment for the mass-production and wide-spread of printed bibles, affordable for 'everyone'. Encouraged by his success in 1816 Léo also initiated a 'Catholic Society for the Distribution of the New Testament' to publish an edition according to the version of Sacy until his 'Institution Biblique Stéréotype' was shut down by the Vatican's condemnation of Bible Societies in 1825.
