Bisson retired from NASA in 1973 and was noted as the scientist who decades earlier had introduced Tribology to the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (the predecessor of NASA.) A bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion to only the desired motion, and reduces friction between moving parts. The design of the bearing may, for example, provide for free linear movement of the moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts. Most bearings facilitate the desired motion by minimizing friction. Bearings are classified broadly according to the type of operation, the motions allowed, or to the directions of the loads (forces) applied to the parts. Rotary bearings hold rotating components such as shafts or axles within mechanical systems, and transfer axial and radial loads from the source of the load to the structure supporting it. The simplest form of bearing, the plain bearing, consists of a shaft rotating in a hole. Lubrication is often used to reduce friction. In the ball bearing and roller bearing, to prevent sliding friction, rolling elements such as rollers or balls with a circular cross-section are located between the races or journals of the bearing assembly. A wide variety of bearing designs exists to allow the demands of the application to be correctly met for maximum efficiency, reliability, durability and performance. The term "bearing" is derived from the verb "to bear"; a bearing being a machine element that allows one part to bear (i.e., to support) another. Dieser US-Forschungsbericht von Mai 1955 im Besitz der MG dokumentiert den frühen transatlantischen Technologietransfer der… Nachkriegszeit. Eine Studie, die für die Metallgesellschaft existenzielle Bedeutung hatte: es war die 'Geburtsstunde' der Tribologie-Forschung(Reibungslehre): Mitte der 1950er Jahre untersuchte die NACA unter Hochdruck die physikalischen Grundlagen für die aufkommende Düsenluftfahrt und Raketentechnik. Triebwerke rotierten immer schneller und wurden extrem heiß. Herkömmliche flüssige Schmieröle versagten oder verdampften sofort. Bisson und sein Team untersuchten hier an der absoluten Grenze der Werkstoffkunde: Wie verhindern dünne, feste Oberflächenfilme (solid surface films wie Oxide, Sulfide oder Molybdändisulfid), dass Metalle bei extremer Reibung miteinander verschweißen und fressen? Gleichzeitg war Lurgi auf den Bau von Hochleistungs-Apparaten spezialisiert: die MG-Tochter konstruierte damals riesige, hochkomplexe verfahrenstechnische Anlagen (z. B. Gasreinigung, Hochdruck-Synthesereaktoren, schwere Rührwerke). In diesen Anlagen gab es Ventile, Lager und Wellen, die unter gigantischem Druck und ohne klassische Ölschmierung laufen mussten. Die exakten mathematischen und metallurgischen Daten der NACA über Reibungskoeffizienten (friction) und Verschleißraten (wear) waren für die Lurgi-Ingenieure die perfekte Konstruktionsgrundlage, um Anlagenschäden und Materialermüdung im Keim zu ersticken.Veredelung von Metalloberflächen: Hinzu kam: die Metallgesellschaft war nicht nur Händler, sondern betrieb über ihre Tochtergesellschaften intensive Forschung zur Oberflächenbehandlung (z. B. das berühmte Bonder-Verfahren zur Phosphatierung von Stahl). Die Arbeit der NACA lieferte der MG-Forschungsabteilung in Frankfurt den theoretischen Beweis, wie künstlich erzeugte chemische Schutzschichten auf Metallen den mechanischen Oberflächenschaden (surface damage) drastisch senken können. Für die MG zukunftsentscheidend war schließlich die Kenntnis der strategischen US-Militär- und Luftfahrtforschung. Da Deutschland bis 1955 strengen alliierten Beschränkungen in der Luftfahrtforschung unterlag, war diese NACA-Schrift (Technical Note 3444) ein unschätzbares Fenster zur amerikanischen Spitzenforschung. Die Bibliothekare der Literarischen Abteilung bezogen diese Berichte direkt aus Washington und hatten unser Buch ein Jahr nach seinem Druck auf dem Tisch. Dies war entscheidend, damit die MG-Metallurgen den Anschluss an die absolute Weltspitze bei den Werkstoffen für die Luft- und Raumfahrt nicht verloren. Fazit: ein Schlüsseldokument der modernen Tribologie und Luftfahrt-Werkstoffforschung. Wegweisender US-Forschungsbericht der NACA (1955) über Reibungs- und Verschleißmechanismen von Metallen unter dem Einfluss fester Oberflächenfilme. Unverzichtbares Referenzwerk für die Lurgi-Hochdruckverfahrenstechnik und das metallurgische Zentrallabor der MG zur Entwicklung verschleißfester Spezialapparate und Oberflächenbeschichtungen.
