This book details the methodology used by the Dominion Lands Surveys laboratory for evaluating the quality of small telescopes by way of a series of experiments that set out to determine the effects of various aberrations on the resolution of a telescope. Through visual experiments, the author concludes that the highest visual acuity is achieved at a distance of approximately 7.5 meters and found that the resolution of the human eye was proportional to the diameter of the pupil aperture up to 0.9 mm, at which point the resolution of the eye increased more slowly than the aperture until it reached unity for an aperture of 2.5 mm. The results of these experiments were then used to develop a method for testing the resolution of small telescopes which could be used to determine the quality of a telescope's objective and ocular. The book concludes that a telescope's resolution is limited either by the resolution of the objective or by the resolution of the eye in conjunction with the ocular, and that the best size for a surveyor's telescope is the smallest that will just meet his requirements.
