Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the Great Level of the Fens, a vast tract of land in eastern England that has undergone dramatic changes over centuries. The author meticulously examines the origins of this region, tracing its development from a once thriving woodland to a swampy expanse. He argues that the Romans played a significant role in shaping the Fens by clearing trees and creating drainage systems, ultimately leading to the transformation of the landscape. The book's analysis of the various rivers that flow through the region, including the Grant, Ouze, and Nene, reveals how their courses and outfalls have impacted the surrounding land over time. The author presents a compelling picture of the natural forces that shaped the Fens, and how human intervention, particularly in the form of drainage projects, has profoundly impacted the area's ecology and human settlement patterns. His insights offer a unique historical perspective on the challenges and triumphs of land reclamation and the delicate balance between human ambition and the forces of nature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Inner contents sound, overall a Vg copy. [NOTE OF INTEREST: "An earlier auction catalogue entry, pasted on the back endpapers, reads thus: Elstobb W, The Late, Engineer. An Historical Account Of The Great Level Of The Fens, Called Bedford Level, And Other Fens, Marshes And Low-Lands in this Kingdom, and other Places; With References to Leland's Itinerary, Dugdale's History of Imbanking and Draining. Lynn. 1793. Roy 8vo. Pps viii, 12, 276, 4 page book catalogue, large folding map. Original full calf, rebacked and old spine laid down, endpapers discoloured but the rest of the book clean and fresh.
