BRIEF BACKGROUND: Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is one of the foundational works of English literature, a lively cycle of stories told by pilgrims travelling to Canterbury. This Folio Society edition reproduces the famous Golden Cockerel Press production of 1929-31, which is especially admired for Eric Gill's wood engravings and for the close integration of image, border, initial letters, and text. Gill's work for the Golden Cockerel Press helped define the look of interwar British private press book design, making this facsimile desirable to collectors of Chaucer, Folio Society limited editions, Golden Cockerel Press, and fine illustrated books.
