Growing up in the multicultural city of Biaystok, he witnessed how language barriers fuelled conflict, and envisioned a neutral, easy-to-learn tongue that could foster peace and understanding. Drawing vocabulary from European languages and designing grammar with elegant regularity, he published the language in 1887 under the pseudonym "Dr. Esperanto", meaning one who hopes.
