Antonio Ardizone (also, Ardizzone) Spinola (1609-1697) was an Italian-Portuguese clergyman, missionary, and orator. Eusebio de Matos (1629-1692) was a Brazilian theology professor, orator, painter, and poet. De Matos was born in Salvador, Brazil and was the son of a nobleman, Pedro Goncalves de Mattos, and Dona Marina da Guerra. In his youth, De Matos studied humanities under the noted priest and philosopher, Father Antonio Vieira, who was a member of the Society of Jesus. Eventually, De Matos succeeded Vieira when he joined the Society. Like Vieira, De Matos became one of the most prominent orators in Salvador. In 1669, De Matos was called to serve as orator to the King of Portugal, Dom Pedro II, but his superiors prevented him from going. He later joined the Order of Mount Carmel in 1680. …
