The description of the theoretical and historical development in Hungary is supplemented by a series of case studies examining the effect of emblematics upon various literary genres. The final chapter analyzes the link between literary emblematics and the visual arts by looking at a specific example. As in most European countries, emblematics in Hungary is part of a complex labyrinth of literary modes of thought and expression. A relative poverty of theoretical writing went hand in hand with a considerable range of emblematic practice. The emblem proved to be a transitional form between the period when signs and motifs were regarded as having specific and fixed meanings and the modern period when we have developed a different and shifting concept of language and meaning. At the same time as emblems began to penetrate the more popular levels of national culture and literature, they also became more specialized. Hungarian emblematics used, for the most part, existing pictorial and textual combinations of pictures and texts. They employed the emblem notably in genres and texts of the genus demonstrativum, which referred to matters which were topical at the time.…

Wenn drei Künstler in der Wirklichkeit von 1992, denen es im Traum nicht einfiele, sich untereinander zu vergleichen oder sich gar an der Ewigkeit zu messen, gemeinsam den Einfall realisieren, mit einer unzeitgemäßen Themen-Ausstellung "Stein - Sein" den wahllos eiligen Kunstbesichtigern für einen Moment ein Staubkorn unters Augenlied zu jubeln - so ist falsch beraten, wer hier nur einen ironischen Gag vermutet. Der Gag ist, daß er keiner ist, und das Staubkorn rötet ebenso wenig ein Auge, wie sich die Künstler der Illusion hingegeben hätten, es könnte sich zu Sand im Getriebe des Kunstbetriebes verwandeln. Vielmehr treibt Humor hier Ernst. Den wird jedoch nur bemerken, wer vor der (kleinen) Anzahl der ausgestellten Arbeiten die Ausstellung nicht übersieht. Wer die Ausstellung aber bemerkt und sie wie ein gebündeltes Monument betrachtet, in dem jedes Werk gleichsam aus den Grenzen seiner jeweils eigenen Welt herausgerissen, dafür einem übergeordneten, fremden Zusammenhang unterstellt wird, vor dem (als "Hintergrund") es schließlich den Fragen ausgesetzt ist, die zwar vom Betrachter an die Werke gerichtet werden, aber im Thema, das kein einziges Werk dieser Künstler jemals thematisiert, vorgeben sind. - wer also die ausgestellten Werke zusammen als eine Ausstellung betrachtet, dem eröffnet die kurzweilige Betrachtung gleichwohl eine überzeitliche Perspektive, genannt Überblick. Ein solcher Zugewmn, in der Epoche der Information über die Maßen geschätzt, bisweilen gar mit "dem Erhabenen" verwechselt, ist indes eine zu ernste Angelegenheit, als daß man ihn ungebrochen anstreben oder auf der Habenseite als eindeutig positiv verbuchen kann. Denn sowie der Überblick mit der ihm eigenen Großzügigkeit die Integrität des Einzelwerkes streift und mit ihr stets auch das eigentliche, auf ein immer Neues inspirierende Motiv der Kunst dieser kaum verwandten Künstler ignoriert, zeitigt er unmittelbar das Defizit eines Übersehens.
