Format grand in-4°( 28,7 x 25,4 cm )( 1815 gr ). ------- 272 pages avec 275 illustrations. ****************************** "" Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992), antiquaire et décoratric…e de renommée internationale, fut le mécène de nombreux peintres de l'École de Paris et d'artistes de l'académie de la Grande Chaumière, ainsi que l'amie de nombreuses personnalités, parmi lesquels Modigliani, Soutine - qui réalisa son portrait en 1928, Erik Satie, Maurice Sachs, Blaise Cendrars, André Derain, Cocteau (dont elle aménagea la maison à Milly-la-Forêt), Chagall, Iché, Picasso, Henry Miller, Louise de Vilmorin et Francine Weisweiller (dont elle décora la villa Santo-Sospir à Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat). Personnalité originale, voire fantasque, elle a révolutionné le monde de la décoration. Le " style Castaing " fait aujourd'hui figure de référence. Madeleine Castaing s'inspire de l'esthétique néoclassique non sans l'interpréter à sa manière. Contemporaine de l'Italien Mario Praz qui s'éloigne des canons habituels de la décoration intérieure et se tourne vers le début du XIXe siècle, rivale d'Emilio Terry qui invente le " style Louis XVII ", elle s'inscrit dans un même mouvement de renouveau par rapport à l'omniprésence de Louis XV ou de Louis XVI, tout en se distinguant par son mélange des genres. Il s'agissait, en premier lieu, de s'écarter des conventions pour " faire de la poésie avec du mobilier ", selon sa devise. " Je fais des maisons comme d'autres des poèmes ", disait-elle, et son disciple Jacques Grange évoque à son propos " des émotions que l'on ne connaissait pas jusqu'alors dans le monde de la décoration ", émotions qui influencent les architectes d'intérieur encore aujourd'hui.
