Foreword by Simon Ramo. Commentaries by Arnold O. Beckman and Henry T. Mudd. Some front board weakness noted. DJ is in a plastic sleeve and is soiled and worn. Som…e edge soiling. Michael Evlanoff wrote Alfred Nobel: Prize Donor in 1944. This current work, written in collaboration with Marjorie Fluor, completes his revelations of his intimate knowledge of this extraordinary Alfred Nobel and of the Nobel family. Marjorie Fluor was the wife of J. Simon Fluor of the famed Fluor Corporation. She was active in many philanthropic organizations which led in part to her interest in Alfred Nobel "who combined an industrial empire with scientific invention and a compassionate love for his fellow man." Alfred Bernhard Nobel (21 October 1833 10 December 1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist. Known for inventing dynamite, Nobel also owned Bofors, which he had redirected from its previous role as primarily an iron and steel producer to a major manufacturer of cannon and other armaments. Nobel held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. After reading a premature obituary which condemned him for profiting from the sales of arms, he bequeathed his fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. His name also survives in modern-day companies such as Dynamit Nobel and AkzoNobel, which are descendants of mergers with companies Nobel himself established. As a young man, Nobel studied with chemist Nikolai Zinin; then, in 1850, went to Paris to further the work. There he met Ascanio Sobrero, who had invented nitroglycerin three years before. Sobrero strongly opposed the use of nitroglycerin, as it was unpredictable, exploding when subjected to heat or pressure. But Nobel became interested in finding a way to control and use nitroglycerin as a commercially usable explosive, as it had much more power than gunpowder. At age 18, he went to the United States for one year to study chemistry, working for a short period under inventor John Ericsson, who designed the American Civil War ironclad USS Monitor. Nobel filed his first patent, an English patent for a gas meter, in 1857, while his first Swedish patent, which he received in 1863, was on 'ways to prepare gunpowder'. The family factory produced armaments for the Crimean War (18531856), but had difficulty switching back to regular domestic production when the fighting ended and they filed for bankruptcy. In 1859, Nobel's father left his factory in the care of the second son, Ludvig Nobel (18311888), who greatly improved the business. Nobel and his parents returned to Sweden from Russia and Nobel devoted himself to the study of explosives, and especially to the safe manufacture and use of nitroglycerin. Nobel invented a detonator in 1863, and in 1865 designed the blasting cap. On 3 September 1864, a shed used for preparation of nitroglycerin exploded at the factory in Heleneborg, Stockholm, killing five people, including Nobel's younger brother Emil. Dogged and unfazed by more minor accidents, Nobel went on to build further factories, focusing on improving the stability of the explosives he was developing. Nobel invented dynamite in 1867, a substance easier and safer to handle than the more unstable nitroglycerin. Dynamite was patented in the US and the UK and was used extensively in mining and the building of transport networks internationally. In 1875 Nobel invented gelignite, more stable and powerful than dynamite, and in 1887 patented ballistite, a predecessor of cordite. Daniel R. DeChaine (endpaper maps) (illustrateur).

Ajouter au panierA large and in-depth collection of approximately 3,500 original photos from a post-revolutionary Russian exile "prince" of aristocratic bearing and aspirations but not pedigree, Michael Evlanoff. He gained notoriety for his marriage to cosmetics pioneer Elizabeth Arden in 1942. It would end two years later after he had connived…tremendous sums from her and her private detective discovered his Russian title and much-ballyhooed stipend from Swedish dynamite magnate-turned-humanitarian Alfred Nobel were utter fictions. Evlanoff certainly did not lack moxy, though. According to one account, the Russian con man was bisexual and had gone so far to invite his boyfriend along with him and Arden on their honeymoon! This archive covers the would-be prince's global jaunts and debauches from around 1920 to 1960, consisting of ten quarto volumes (7.5" x 9" each) rebacked with leather spines over marbled boards. All the albums are dated with captions initially in Russian, then French, then, in the final 20 years or so, English. Mostly b/w photos, with onionskin protective sheets. The leaves were mounted to stubs; a few have come loose. Very Good overall. No photos appear to be missing, some darkening along boards, a few chips and flaking original leather. The subject matter of these photos varies widely. While many photos are of the uber-wealthy soirees at nightclubs, yachts, posh hotels, and restaurants, there are also landscape photos, some city shots with people in diverse locales like Rio de Janeiro and Berlin under the Nazis, skiing-related photos, and a number of photos of oil exploration equipment and processes in Texas in the 1920s. Evlanoff's apparently documented his dalliances with different beautiful young women, especially in his later years, and their photos (occasionally topless) are a running theme throughout the archive. He was also the quintessential hob-nobber who clearly made a point of getting his photo taken with celebrities whenever possible. Likely one of the most extensive photographic archives of a White Russian exile available in recent memory. It documents the upper crust and their get-togethers around the world in the early to mid 20th century, as well as one life maybe not so much well-lived, per say, as one vigorously lived nonetheless.
