Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a translation of the maritime memoirs of Jean-Marie-Nicolas Lucas and Denis-Nicolas Levraud, two experienced French naval officers who sailed and fought on the high seas during the waning years of the age of sail. Their combined experiences illuminate the dangers, challenges, and rewards of life at sea, on a wide range of voyages. Beginning with Levraud's youth as a cabin boy, these memoirs chronicle detailed accounts of life aboard French naval and merchant vessels, their travels to the far corners of the globe, the changing nature of naval warfare, and ultimately the transition from sail to steam power. The compelling voices of these men, paired with meticulous editorial footnotes providing historical context, offer exceptional insight into the everyday realities of life at sea during this pivotal era of maritime history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. THE MAP THAT CREATED REGENT STREET. NASH (John). FADEN (William), publisher. Plan of a Street Proposed from Charing Cross to Portland Place. Designed by J. Nash Esq. London: Published by William Faden, Geographer to His Majesty and to H.R.H. the Prince Regent, Charing Cross, 11 May 1814. Large engraved map with original hand-colour, 330 x 470 mm. Engraved by Thomson. Printed on laid paper. A very good example with contemporary hand-colour. Scattered foxing and spotting, otherwise clean. Unmounted. An important separately-issued proposal map documenting the earliest phase of John Nash's celebrated scheme for what would become Regent Street. Published only months after the passing of the New Street Act (1813), the plan records Nash's proposed ceremonial route linking Carlton House, the Prince Regent's London residence, with Portland Place and the new developments around Regent's Park. The route shown here predates the more developed reduction plans published the following year, representing the project at its formative stage before construction was fully underway. The colouring distinguishes Crown property (shown in blue) from land requiring acquisition under the provisions of the 1813 Act, illustrating the immense scale of the redevelopment. Far more than a new thoroughfare, Nash conceived the street as the centerpiece of a comprehensive reordering of Regency London, creating a grand processional avenue while simultaneously encouraging commercial development, relieving congestion around Charing Cross and Piccadilly, and establishing a physical and social boundary between the fashionable districts of St James and Mayfair and the crowded streets of Soho. Published by William Faden (1749-1836), Geographer to George III and the Prince Regent, and one of Britain's foremost cartographic publishers, this map represents the official presentation of Nash's proposal at the outset of one of the defining architectural and urban planning projects of the Regency period. Regent Street remains one of London's most recognisable streets and one of the enduring monuments of Nash's vision. A scarce separately-issued Regency planning map issued before the appearance of the more detailed 1815 reduction of Nash's proposal. A copy is placed in the British Library.…

Ajouter au panierNo Binding. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Engraved map by and after Faden on laid paper watermarked 'JBATES', hand-coloured in outline (platemark: 715 x 555mm; sheet: 755 x 572), folded vertically for binding, traces of guard on verso. Annotated and numbered on the verso 'Irelande 7' in a contemporary hand. (Very light offsetting, slightly creased, short marginal tear, small candle-wax mark.) A very good example with contemporary hand colouring. First edition. The engraver and cartographer William Faden (1749-1836) served an apprenticeship with the London engraver James Wigley before going into partnership with the family of the deceased map maker Thomas Jefferys as 'Faden and Jefferys'. During 'the years of the American wars Faden came to prominence with maps and atlases of considerable historical note' (ODNB), and following an inheritance from his father in 1783, Faden bought out the remaining Jefferys interest and took sole control of the business. In the same year Faden was appointed 'Geographer in Ordinary' to King George III and the Prince of Wales (the engraved compass rose on the present map has the latter's heraldic badge above it). 'Systematic in the acquisition of the best available maps, Faden developed the most competent cartographic service of the period. His was an international concern, in contact with map makers throughout Europe. He supplied government departments and commissioned fresh surveys. A gold medallist of the Society of Arts in 1796, his activities foreshadowed the emergence of national cartographic agencies. He brought out the first published Ordnance Survey map, An Entirely New & Accurate Survey of the County of Kent (1801). Some of his plates were likewise adopted as official Admiralty maps. When he moved at this time to larger premises at no. 5 Charing Cross, his maps were reputed the finest being engraved anywhere in the world' (op. cit.). 'A Map of Ireland Divided into Provinces and Counties' was included in Faden's General Atlas and was also issued as a folding map laid down on linen. As Tooley notes, 'Faden apparently did not publish standard atlases with printed titles, but made up collections to suit his customers' requirements, and bound them up without title or list of contents [. . .]. The number may vary from 20 to 60' (R.V. Tooley, Maps and Map Makers (1952), p. 52). In the Library of Congress copy of the General Atlas this map was the seventh in the volume, and the guard on the verso of this map together with the manuscript inscription 'Irelande 7' suggest that this map was extracted from a copy of the atlas with a similar order and composition to that of the Library of Congress copy, apparently from the library of a French (or francophone) owner.
