This is in fact a new copy, received from the publisher Raymond Danowski. A selection of work by the enigmatic British-American poet whose brief career intersected… with both the late Beats and the New York mimeo scene of the Sixties. Fainlight's writing career was cut short by mental illness, and he died, alone, in 1976, having published (despite many contributions to periodicals) only one small chapbook during his life. This brief selection Includes a substantial Foreword by Stephen Spender and a frontispiece illustration by Mary Moore (daughter of sculptor Henry Moore).

Ajouter au panierEtat : Very good. First edition. Complete set of Ed Sanders's short-lived "Quote of the Week" from his notorious press, featuring three brief selections from Harry Fainlight, John Ashbery, and Kenneth Koch. Run off over the course of several weeks in the fall of 1964, these three gossipy, insular, self-referential broadsides are… among the most ephemeral and quintessentially FU productions to be pulled off of Sanders' Lower East Side mimeograph. The first, dated Sept. 5th, is by Harry Fainlight (1935-1982) and transcribes a piece of a conversation Fainlight delivered at Bickfords in Times Square: "I have piles / I thought it was / gonorrhea / it's terrible / I have to / do all / kinds of / sordid blow job / scenes / now." The second, dated Sept. 14th, records poet John Ashbery's reaction (overheard at a party at Bill Berkson's on East 57th Street) to Ed Sanders' recently-issued TOE-QUEEN POEMS. And the third, dated September 23rd, finds Kenneth Koch having just read Harry Fainlight's first Quote of the Week: "It's shit. It's all shit." All of these Quotes are individually scarce, and this is the first time we've seen them offered as a set. Rare thus. 11'' x 8.5''. Three mimeographed broadsides printed recto only on pink paper. Mild toning to edges. Right edge of one mildly worn. Another folded in half. Overall, clean and sound.

Edited by his sister Ruth, who also provides the Introduction. Ginsberg also provides a short memoir. This copy has been inscribed by Ruth Fainlight, the poet's sister, to the art critic and author Edward Lucie-Smith. Also loosely inserted is an additional compliments card with the poem 'April' inscribed by Bernard Stone, the publisher, in the year of publication. Harry Fainlight (1935-1982) was an Anglo-American poet who was closely associated with the Beat movement in 1960s America. Educated at Cambridge University, Fainlight was a contemporary of Ted Hughes, and with his duel citizenship he travelled freely to and from America, where he met Allen Ginsberg, who later referred to him as "the most gifted poet of his generation". When, at the suggestion of Hughes, Faber and Faber offered to publish his work, he lit a petrol soaked-rag and posted it through the publisher's letterbox - he had suffered with mental illness for the majority of his adult life. He died in 1982 from pneumonia after taking an evening walk.
