First Edition. [Arctic Exploration] FIRST EDITION. Two volumes. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.[2] xl; 395 [3]; pp.[2] viii; 378 [2]. With six very fine photographic plates, including a frontispiece to each volume, seven full page illustrated plates, 38 in-text illustrations, and a folding map to volume II (lacking map to volume I). Contemporary dark green half calf, with gilt titles and ruling to spines, and marbled paper over boards. All edges speckled red. Armorial bookplate of Frederick Charles Hill to front pastedown of each volume, otherwise internally crisp and clean. Spine and corners rubbed and toned, with joints just starting to tail of spine. Sturdy and presentable overall. Good. The official account of the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-76, which was originally intended to penetrate the Smith Sound between the most northerly points of Greenland and Canada in order to sail into an assumed 'Polar Sea.' Although they did not find the fabled sea or reach the North Pole, the expedition reached the most northerly point then on record, established that the Pole was frozen year-round, and made valuable records of the people, wildlife and landscape encountered.…
